Finding a lone bear

Recommended Posts

While out checking on some food plots on a piece of private land I found a lone set of bear tracks. These were left in the last two weeks. This piece of land is 15 miles south of the southern most bear zone.

I realize this is probably a lone bear, probably a male. I don't know anything about bear hunting, but now I am intrigued. Would it be worth my time to try and establish a bait site and see if he is still in the area? Is this even remotely worthwhile?

Being a no quota area, getting a tag is not a problem. I can only imagine how some of you regular bear hunters think this sounds since you put so much effort into the areas you hunt. I am just wondering if there is a decent possiblilty that bears may live in the area and might offer a first timer a chance at seeing an animal or if my odds are so slim that its hardly worth the time to establish a bait site.

I hunt a no qouta zone also, i scored my first year and had way more bears than I expected around.

If it is not a real long drive or really inconvient for you I would give it a try, bear hunting is only as hard as you make it. I personally don't drive and plan out my bear hunts hours away, i do what I can to get it done near home here, but the trade off is fewer bears and a little tougher hunting. Give a try and if you don't like it or don't get any action your not out that much.

Plus it gives a guy something to do until bow season starts.
