army wall tent

I am looking at purchasing a GP Small 6 sided tent. Was wondering if anyone had one and how they like it. I am looking to use it for deer season and one concern I have is how to heat a tent like this. I have seen many wood stoves for these tents but not sure how often you have to stoke them since they don't look like they hold much wood. Also was trying to look into a vented propane heater but haven't found much in my research. If anyone has any experience with this I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi guys,

I have used a nuway propane stove in my 8-12 wall tent. It does not heat nearly enough. I have added and additional sun heater and that does the trick. The tent breaths plenty to exaust the fumes.

I am going to try a small wood stove this year.

Have spent many nights in the Yukon in a surplus wall tent. Dig it it. Spread heavy mil visqueen over the top. Get a tent that has a proper insulated fitting for a wood stove chimney. Get a large enough wood stove. Sleep up off the ground. If it's real cold you might have to stoke it once a night...but if its a gorgeous clear night and you can hear the wolves for miles it is worth it to listen for a minute and then scramble back into your 5-Star Woods bag and knock off a couple more hours before frosty dawn.

I miss it.

If you check the Army surplus stores you may the gas stoves the army uses. tip a jerry can upside down, gas follows into a valve system, box stoves. They heat these tents very well. Look for the winter liner, you could heat the tent with a liner with a triple sunspot heater easy,I would even think a double would fine.

Our party has hunted in northern MN out of a GP medium (16x32) for 25+ years. We all sleep on cots, put some tarps/scrap carpet on parts of the floor.

We use a 55 gallon barrel stove...usually needs a stokeing once during the night, depending on how good our wood is and how well the last guy adjusted the damper!!

I wouldn't want to hunt out of anything else:)

I have a 10 man arctic army tent. We have used it hunting and at Eelpout festival. During Eelpout, we used a nu-way 27K vented heater, and a big buddy, and it kept us warm. I also have the liner but have never used it. Don't use the tent anymore, as I have a wheelhouse, and my wife likes to ice fish... Shoot me a pm if any questions.

My brother in law is a geologist and spends a good portion of every winter up in Alaska, sleeping in a tent. They use diesel heaters. They put 2 tents (big tents) next to each other and have an elevated (5ft) 55 gallon drum set between them, with a line into each tent. Worth looking into.

Thanks for all the good advice! Sorry I haven't been on in a while. So we ended up buying a GP Medium that came with a furnace, and 2 wooden doors for the ends that are spring loaded for easy access. It ended up being the same price as the army surplus stores GP Small and it came with all the extras. Set it up in my back yard and saw a few small holes in the ceiling, some have been patched with GOOP and some were new so I used the same stuff. During the day sure looks like a lot of light is coming through the holes but I sure hope they sealed well. Thinking about throwing a couple tarps over the top just in case. Anyone else have any experience with these tents? Any tips and tricks would be appreciated as this is our first time going down this road for deer camp.

Maybe find a place with a garden hose handy and set the tent up. Then put a sprayer attachment on the hose and arc the water onto the roof. You'd know if your patches will stand up to a heavy rain before you're in the field.

And keep a tube of GOOP handy.
