Former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief and team owner Ray Evernham remains adamant about having no intention of returning to NASCAR in an active crew chief role. That does not mean that he will be staying away from the Sprint Cup garage much longer.

Evernham told Dave Moody on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway broadcast that he will return to the garage in an unofficial, and as yet undefined, role with Hendrick Motorsports in 2012.

“I will have no real official capacity other than being part of Hendrick Motorsports,” Evernham said. “I want to help if I can, and advise here and there. Kasey (Kahne) is going over there next year and I think I might be able to help with some of the transition.”

Evernham has a strong connection with Kahne, and fielded cars for him at the former Evernham Motorsports before being pushed out of that operation.

“I feel a responsibility to Kasey Kahne to make sure he’s got a shot at winning the championship,” Evernham says of the pair’s friendship. “I believe in him, and it’ll be good to be back at the track a little bit more next year.

“But honestly, there will be no official capacity. I will just be a part of the Hendrick team, doing whatever they need and being friends with Mr. Hendrick.”

Evernham has spent the past year away from NASCAR as a consultant working on strategic plans for Hendrick’s auto dealerships and aftermarket automotive interests. He’s also been driving his own sprint car on a limited basis, but admits his helmet may be going back on the shelf . . . at least part of the time.

“I’ve got six or seven more sprint car races before the end of the year,” he said. “Then I’m probably going to have to make a decision about how much I’m going to race next year. I’d like to get back to the (NASCAR) track in 2012, so I think my sprint car racing is going to suffer.”

well i think what ray is saying is that he probably promised more than he could deliver when he started his own teams and just didnt have the capabilitys that will be availalbe to him at hendricks

he didnt really say that he wouldnt help jeff

i do think kahne is going to be a very strong threat next yr with or with out everham he running ok this yr

so with all the $$$$$$$ and experience at hendricks they could finish 1...2....3 again next year maybe 1..2..3..4 if jr could step it up (had to throw that in for harvey) lol!!!!!!!

From what I hear, too many say Jr is not good enough and if he does not win the Chase for the next 2 years, then he has to go.

I get a kick out of some like kbb as they state the only reason Jr has a ride every week is due to his name.

Seems he is well above the biggest majority in the points but he has a ride due to his name only.

Some people's kids.
