3D Television?

I'm about to buy a new TV for my basement. I'm going with a 50"ish plasma and was not even considering one with 3D capabilities. We watch about one new movie per year, with the remaining 75% of our tv viewing being sports. However, I just put on the 3D glasses at Best Buy tonight and saw a college football replay. Wow, the customer next to me told me not to do it and he was right. That is UNBELIEVABLY INCREDIBLE technology for sports!!!

Here is the real question: do any of you think that paying the extra for 3D is really worth it? Do they even broadcast your typical Twins/Vikings/Gophers game in 3D yet?

DirecTV has 3 3D channels. Also there is ESPN 3D which broadcasts up to 85 live games a year. Chances of having local sports broadcast in 3D are pretty slim at the moment, but it is growing.

Also remember in the extra cost, you will need a 3D ready receiver and subscriptions for the channels.

3D isn't for me because I have better, more productive things to spend my money on.

One thing about 3D, if you are a gamer, don't play games in 3D. It will get you sicker than a dog. I know a few guys that have told me that they have gotten really sick from all the motion that video games have

Unless you really love, not worth the money. The current tech is only stop gap while they work towards glasses free 3D. Also, as mentioned above, there isn't a lot of programming for it. Some people do get sick from it, and even if you don't, you have a good chance of it the longer you watch (in one sitting).

I bought a new 46" TV this year and skipped it, but I am not sold on the tech or even very interested in it. Not until the "Star Wars" type 3D holograms appear anyway!!

Glasses free 3D TVs are not coming any time soon, if they ever come out at all. The only reason it works on a phone is because there is only one viewer, very close to the display, with their eyes always in the same position. For anyone sitting on a couch their eyes are much too close together to send different images to each eye on a single individual sitting directly in front of display. Now put a couple set of eyeballs there and you are approaching the impossible task limits.

Supposedly Toshiba has two coming out in 2012, but I am not holding my breath.

I've heard on more than one occasion not to waste your money on a 3D TV. Not at this time, anyway. Lack of programming and some doubt on the future of 3D movies (in their current form) are two of the reasons. Sounds like movie companies are taking it in the shorts on making these 3D versions and they probably aren't going to keep making them if they're losing money at the theaters.

I definitely won't buy one, but I can't how insanely cool it was to watch a sports event in 3D

Yeah, but I think I would get tired of having to monkey around with the glasses after a while. And then what do you do when you have people over to watch the game? Buy 6,8,10,12 pairs so everyone can see it in 3D? Not gonna happen.

If....and that's if....I ever got a 3D tv for watching football, you're darned right that I'll buy 20 sets of glasses!

I don't see 3D surviving.. I wouldn't invest in one.. seems to be more of a Fad than anything.. did it go anywhere in the 80s? nope.. did Virtual Boy make strides for the 3D gaming world? No. 3D tv is riding the consumer driven walmart family wave
