PEATMOSS
Dumb, quick, easy question Is there sales tax on a private party boat sale?
Superduty
No tax on the boat. Only on the declared value of the trailer!
Ufatz
That is correct.
PEATMOSS
Thanks guys, All I needed to know. I'm looking at options that are both private party and at dealerships. That 6.5% makes a huge difference.
SkunkedAgain
It never hurts to tell the dealer that you've got a similar deal with a private party, but the difference maker is the sales tax. The dealer may (if you ask) lower their price to compensate.
amateurfishing
i was going to license office next week to change registration from boat i bought from private party last fall. DNR said all i need is "bill of sale" from private party stating he sold me the boat and amount of sale. When i go to license office all I pay tax on is "trailer value"? not entire package deal of boat, motor, & trailer? why?
LightningBG
It's government. You cant expect to get a legitimate "why" for much of what they do.

Pat K
The trailer is registered and licensed by the DMV, the boat is registered and licensed by the DNR. Other than that who knows how or why the government does anything.
