Wierd Meat

Recommended Posts

I was cleaning a 19in eye this weekend and the flesh between the backbone and dorsal looked dead. There were a couple quarter sized pockets that were off-color and I could peal it away. Anybody else seen this or know what it was? The fish was plump and looked healthy. I ate it anyway and haven't died yet.

You should report that to the DNR. It sounds like the same parasite we found in some perch on Leech and it has spread to other lakes. There was some real good info on it posted here on FM over the winter. Darned if I can find it now.

As I recall they were worried that it might jump species to walleyes but up until now it had only been found in perch.

That was what it looked like. The fish I had wasn't as bad as the picture though. Kinda scary. I will have to contact the DNR. Does anyone know what the email address is?

Got an email back from them. They said based on what I described, it was not the Heterosporis. He said there were multiple things it could be and without looking at it, he couldn't be sure.

It even looked like it from the pictures, I suppose he didn't want to say anything until he was sure. I am going to keep my eye open for more. I really hope it wasn't though.

I have also seen something kinda like that on bass. We were in carls lake and say this bass swumming about a foot below surface and his left eye was gone and he was all black. I dont no if thats what u are talking about but it was sure scarey looking and a guy later told us he saw a sunny like that.

Happy fishing
