Walleye Lures?

You've opened a whole new can of worms here
(pun intended). For hard baits I like trolling Raps in the 11 to 13 size behind a three-way rig. And Shad Raps down to 12'. But my favorite is a Reef Runner long lined down to 25' to 28'along a steep break mid summer.

I also like to troll cranks, Shap Raps number 9's are my favorite. Find the sharp breaks or points and troll the edges of them. Best case scenario try finding the breaks that drop into some of the deeper water in the lake, at least in mid-summer that is where I like to target them.

Hey all you great fishermen! This question is for any fisherman including those that aren't great.
I'm used to fishing Northern Minnesota (Kabetogama) and have caught most of my walleyes with jigs and live bait.
I will be fishing Kab this year but mostly S. Minnesota and N. Iowa.
To broaden my arsenal a little bit I am wondering how and when some of you folks use artificial lures to catch walleyes and what lures do you use?
Thanks
Minnesota Wannabe

I really like the #7&9 original rapalas. They always seem to put fish on the stringer. In southern minnesota I would bet that shad raps and rattle traps would work great, especially sine the lakes are usually full of shinners. I would bet that you could do real good hitting up the weed edges in the evening with any of these lures. ><>

I like to use the #7 and #5 shad raps when I troll for walleye's. I like to bounce them off the bottom and then bring them up a little, if you don't feel/hit the bottom for sometime let out more line and repeat the process. For the lake I fish almost exclusively (Big Kandiyohi) the hottest bite of the year with raps is usually during the hottest weather of the year! Good Luck!

Wannabe, a three-way rig consists of your line tied to a three way swivel ( like a regular swivel only with 3 swivels on it instead of 2)a dropper line of about 1' to a bell sinker tied to another swivel on the 3-way, and tied to the third swivel I tie 4' to 6' of line and a snap that I fasten the lure to. This may sound complicated and confusing but it is rather simple, and is a good way to keep a floating lure like a Rapala close to the bottom. Yes a Reef Runner is a deep diving lure that can reach those depths with about 150' of line out. I use a line counter reel to tell how far out the line is and to repeat this distance every time.
Good Luck Lucky

Minnesota Wannabe, just one word of caution when trolling crank baits.
My favorite is the Smithwick Rattl'n Rouge (sp). However, if I buy 5 of them 1 or 2 will not run properly. Make sure your bait runs the way it should before you start using it. You may need to make some adjustments to the lure. One more thing. Trolling shallow water in the spring, after dark, has been my most affective presentation.

Lures vs Live bait rigs. As I thought here trying to answer your question I bet over 90% of my eyes have been caught on live bait rigs - Jigs and minnow, Jigs and leach, crawler harness, floating lindy and minnow, or floating lindy and leach.

I guess of the remaining walleye they have been on shad raps, origninal rapala's, or hammered nickle daredevil spoons under wind blown rock casting conditions.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
