What is the best casting fishing line??

Avid Angler

Question

Hi everyone!

I am looking for some opinions on what the best casting fishing line would be for casting plugs.

I don't cast much, but would like to add it to my arsenol of tricks. I am looking for the best casting line for distance on Rapalas or the like. I never seem to get the distance that I would like. I use a spinning reel set up.

Thanks for help.

It's all about line diameter, mono or braid both cast great but I find that I really have to downsize on breaking strength to get a monofilament that casts lighter-weight lures better. I pretty much use braid exclusively for my main line.

You have to state a # test that you're looking for. I've used 2# mono and that outdistance 4# Fireline. If I was using 4# mono, the Fireline would outdistance that. It also depends on wind direction and conditions. I have more problem with Fireline on a cross wind as it seems to catch more air compare to a heavier flourocarbon line that catches less air. In that kind of condition the flourocarbon line gets more distance. It's also amazing in how much casting distance is affected when you go up a line test like from 4# to 6# test. Furthermore softer and more limp lines do casts better for distance. Some lines requires a little soak time to loosen up and lose that line memory coils. Temperature can have a lot of effect as well. Warmer is always better for lines.

I would use 6-8# fireline or Power pro, I have been leaning more towards power pro lately.

For northern breakoffs, (and i do this to all my rods now) Tie a Uni-Uni knot and put 8#-12# mono or flouro on as a 2' leader. This also helps agains rocks and other things that easily cut the braided lines.

Anyone seeing the new Fireline Tournament EXCEED or the new Berkley NanoFil in the local stores yet? I'm pretty eager to get some on and see if it's as good as many of the reports lead us to think.

Tournament EXCEED Available in:

Spool size - 135m and 300m

Test kg/Dia. mm. - 1.5/0.06, 2/0.07, 2.5/0.08, 3/0.09, 4/0.12, 5/0.15, 6/0.18, 7.5/0.20, 10/0.23, 14/0.30

The lighter weights/diameters in the new Sufix 832 is very impressive to me so far.

I just spent 3.5 hours casting Rapalas last night.

I decided to go with 8lb fireline. I was very happy with the results. I had good distance and was happy with the hooking %. There was no wind, but I think even with a wind I will be good.

Nanofil will be on at least one of my reels after it comes out. Hype or not, I like what it claims. Hope it can deliver as well as Fireline has for me in the past few years.
