building rods

Fishgun,
First of all you should spend some time really thinking about what species of fish your gonna use the rod for and what type of fishing applications. I've built several rods, and it's really a rewarding hobby. Cabela's publishes a catalog with nothing but materials for rod building and tackle. It can be cheap, or about as expensive as you want to make it. Depends a lot on the brand of rod blank you decide to use, and the quality of the hardware that you put on it.
I'd start with pretty cheap stuff at first, and spend some time researching techniques for guide wraps. It's kinda tricky business, but once you master it you'll love it. You're not gonna save a lot of money doing this cause you'll spend quite a bit of time with each outfit, and the materials start to add up. Once your good at it though you can start makin' a bunch at a time and sell em' or give em' as gifts. I've wrapped my name into a couple poles.
Good luck! Have fun.

I've been building custom Ice Rods for about 3 years now. and if you really want to get alot of good information go here: http://www.rod-building.org/list.php?f=2

This site will tell you anything you want to know, and all you have to do is remember that to these guys, an Ice Rod is just a short normal rod.

Hey Fishgun -
According to your profile, you're close to a good supplier of rod blanks - Wild River Distributing at Marine on St. Croix.

I think they may carry other rod building supplies also. You can check them out by calling 651-433-2217.

I'm not much of a craftsman, but I have made a couple rods and they actually turned out quite well. There are some guys that frequent this HSOforum that can help you out too with specific advice.

Wild River doesnt have much for ice rods that I know of, I have built them before, just some cheap fiberglass rods. I may be wrong, they might carry better stuff. I also know they carry St. Croix SCII blanks which are a great rods that are not wallet busters. If you need rod building supplies you should get your hands on one of their catalogs.

I've had lots of success with "Wild River". I hven't used them in a couple years, but they were great to work with. They have a huge selection of 2nd's. Most, I believe, are "St. Croix". If you talk nice they will let you browse through their stuff in the back. Tell them your just starting out and they'll take care of you! You can find any size blank you want. Cut off a long blank and make it a ice rod. The hobby is very rewarding.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
