Acemac
I am heading down south this weekend and plan on fishing trout run and around the preston area. Realy to only way I have ever fished trout is with crawlers. I am getting my gear ready for the weekend and I am curious if you guys have any tips on artificals that I should make sure to include so what are your fave lures for trout on spinning gear? I assume the obvious is meps type spinners but what else are you catching them on. Also do most of you fish with very light line? we always used to use 2-4 lbs test but you lose a ton of stuff in the rocks. is there a good braid? should I tie florocarbon leaders? just curious. Chode2235
I have experimented with a lot of the superlines to avoid the frequent break offs. When using anything other than mono or flourocarbon I hardly ever got bit. So I recommend you stay away from that stuff for trout.I use 4lb flouro, but if I am casting the root (usually by canoe) i step it up to 6 lbs on one of my longer rods.My favorite lure bar none is a number 5 original floating rapala, rainbow trout or silver pattern. I also like the #5 countdown as well. I picked up a #4 x-rap this spring and have had good luck on it too, but havent spent a ton of time with it tied on.Also, the mini-fat raps are great little lures too. I really like the grey crawfish pattern with that one.My favorite spinners are the mepps ultra light spinners, black with gold blade. Although I hardly ever use spinners as the rapalas seem to draw a lot more strikes (and cast better too).I really like a 'strong' jerk and a longer pause. Makes the lure take a bit of a dart and then stop and flutter in the current. Fishing artificials is a lot different game than fishing crawlers. You will have a chance to cover a lot more ground, which makes it much more enjoyable for me.
s t fanatic
dont be afraid to think big. i think that to many trout fisherman think that it has to be a finesse game. obviously there is more than one way to catch a fish. my suggestion is that you use a rod somewhere between 5'9"-6'-6" in a ml.-m. weight and a fast action. i never fish line under 6# unless im throwing a small jig and need smaller line to increase casting distances. on the end of my line i would use 1/4-3/8 oz. panther martins i prefer gold blades and #9-#11 floating raps in natural colors. i feel that when fishing the root you will run into areas that are pretty wide and it may take a heavier lure to be able to cast to the opposite bank. bigger the bait bigger the fish -cam

This^I've also had some success with the #5 Brown Trout Rapala. My cousin will also fish dry flies with a small bobber on the line about 3' away from the fly to give it enough weight to throw with a spinning rod. He says he does pretty well but I've never tried it myself.
Acemac
so do you like to fish rapalas up stream or down?
goblueM
I 3rd the above postthe smallest size husky jerks can't be beat in my book, but all those minnow baits mentioned are awesomeI fish cranks/jerkbaits downstream or perpendicular to current if I can, but I catch plenty of fish pulling them upstream
deets22
i like to stick with 6 lb line. i don't like giving up $5 rapalas to mother nature if i can help it.
itchmesir
just slap some 10lb power pro on your spool... trout definitely do not notice it... also i like using black/yellow and yellow/red panthers
Bugman
I use nothing but 4lb. flourocarbon on a 6' UL. For fun if you are worm dunking I put my spinning reel on my 9' fly rod so you can really sneak up on them on smaller streams. But my top lure would have to be a #7 brown trout countdown rapala. It all depends on what the water depth you are fishing.
Bugman
Even if you lose a lure, hope you have some kind of waders on so you can go get it and move on to the next hole.
Walleyed_Trout
Well hopefully you were able to dodge the storms and wet a line this weekend. How was the fishing?
Acemac
I fished In that down pour on trout run and had a FANTASTIC time! it was pouring but I was in the water without wadders anyway so I hardly even noticed that I was soaked. it was funny I have never fished in the rain and found it so relaxing it was almost sureal. I caught tons of browns and was reminded about why I used to love fishing trout so much! they are truly unlike any other fish. I bought about 50 bucks worth of all the stuff every one suggested and tied on one spinner and fished with that all day <dohh> the driving rain made everything silent except the river it was like a dream were the only thing you can see that is alive is the stream ahead of you. I wish it was not a 2 hour drive to get down there but I will be back for sure sounds like a great thing to do on the next rainy day.
