PierBridge
A friend of mine does the Pigeon racing thing. Pretty wild stuff some of the races are like 500 miles if memory serve me right. I'm guessing his are going to be a bit spendy though for this application. I'll give him a ring and see whats up or if he has any frozen ones lying around. rundrave
I might be a little far from you but might be able to help you out. Are you looking for chicks to raise and train? Or borrow for a day of training and have them fly back to their loft?
LightningBG
Homing pigeons could be a huge undertaking. You would need to get them when they are very small, so they come back to your house vs. the house they were raised at. Going to need to keep them in a brooder, then a coop, feed them, etc.Might be better off to just try to buy or trap some regular pigeons and when they are released, let them go on their way, trap some more. rundrave
as lightning said it is alot of work. not to mention how much bad luck we have had trying to keep our loft "critter" proof. We have had issues with things getting in and killing the birds.you almost need a good mix of flyers and homers. Homers are great because once you get them flying you can use them over and over however you cant shoot them. With flyers you can buy or trap them for next to nothing, plus you can simulate actual hunting situations because you can shoot them and get your dog use to that. pureinsanity
Hes interested. The birds will be by his bite dog. So I am sure if critters come after the pigeons they will have a mean dog barking at them first. Where are you located and do you have a price? Local vet came over and inspected, and he says Im good to go.Im waiting on a few "squeakers" from him to get me started.Would like to chat with you sometime, if youre raising homers. My goal is to just have a small flock of 25-50 for training purposes. Stringerless!
I have racing homers. In fact I got started in them cause I had a pointer. Do not race anymore but still have the birds. Not willing to sell any for dog training but if you have any questions about their care I would be glad to help. They are not like chickens or ducks. They are fed by both parents by regurgitating ( sp?)pigeon (milk). You can not take them from parents until they are about 23-26 days old. At this age they will eat on there own. You will have to dunk their heads in the water source a few times till they figure out where it is. You do not need a brooder or heat source. Check out your local feed mill. Alot of times they will have poultry swaps and someone there will have pigeons.
