Get deer out of woods

I am wondering if anyone has used deer carts to get your deer out of the woods? I've seen them advertised in Cabelas. With the new ATV rules in effect in the Superior National Forest I can no longer use my ATV to retrieve deer I've shot during hunting season. I am retired now, getting older, and can no longer drag the deer out. The fellows I hunt with are my age and older. I've hunted in the same area for 45 years and must now find another way to get my deer out of the woods, or quit hunting, which I do not want to do. The only reason I have my ATV is for deer hunting and to do yard work around the house. Do the carts work, and would I be able use one? Thank you.

I read some of the new regs for ATV's but if you have a mobility problem why not apply for the handicapped permit to use your atv for the expressed purpose of getting you in and out?

I bet they say you cannot anyway but the ADA would have to say something about that. maybe worth a try.

I dont know aboot that carts, but we used one of those oversized sleds last year for hauling deer out, and that worked pretty well. It even has tie downs so the deer doesnt slide off when you are pulling it over a log or whatever

We use one all the time. It works great.

-Make sure you get the deer positioned right in the cart so the balance is good.

-They don't work really well in thick woods, brush, cattails, etc.

-Crossing fallen trees with them can be a little tricky.

-Unless you have the cart with you where you shoot the deer, it typically involves a trip back to camp to get the cart, haul it to the kill site, load the deer up, and haul it back.

Its still alot of work to get the deer out but in my opinion, its way easier than dragging it.

i agree. the carts are a great tool. alot better than dragging. if there is snow on the ground then i would opt for a sled. i bought my cart at cabelas. we used home made ones for years. i like being able to fold it up. del

We'ce used carts to haul out deer for years. We haul the cart in with us to the first stand in the morning and then haul the deer out. We hunt private land though so we feel pretty comfortable leaving it there for a day or two if needed.

Great investment in my book.
