It's 2:30 in the morning, do you what your dogs are doing?

What a way to start out a weekend. Friday night my brother-in-law's dogs (huskys)decided to corner a skunk right out side the cabin. O.M.G. I had never been that close to a skunk when it's gone off and I never want to again. This is the second time they have done this. I wasn't there the first time. (the dogs didn't learn the frist time either.) So all weekend it smelled like skunk at our place. Any one else had this happen to them?

Duck opener last year I let my springer outside when we got up in the morning. Sure enough he found a skunk and got sprayed. Cabin smelled, dog smelled, and worse, was the ride in the truck home. (I don't have a topper or kennel so he and I were in the cab)

Several years ago, I was pheasant hunting with my yellow lab. We were in fairly heavy cover when she locked up. I was a bit surprised she did not flush anything. I gave the 'get'm up' command and in she went. Next thing I know, she is coming to me holding a skunk by the nape of its neck. Being trained to deliver to hand was a definite problem here. I kept backing up yelling "drop, drop, drop", she kept coming to me and the skunk kept on spraying. I have to admit, even though I lost lunch, the sunlight through the spray created the most beautiful array of colors I have seen - just like a big rainbow. I got the dog to a creek where I gave her several mud baths and rinsings. Really didn't do much good. When we got home, I gave her a tomato juice bath which did actually help. Her outdoor kennel smelled of skunk for about a week and I had to give her portable kennel several rinsings.

I'm laughing hard as I write this..........

This is funny.........

So, I go pheasant hunting with my buddy. I got my lab. We stop behind his parents property. His parents are cool people......And like to spend money on some silly things........

So, his parent have to "beaudias" (spelling is way off......), but anyways, these 2 dogs look like sheep. Really curly hair and fairly big dogs. I guess they are some really special hunting dog that is bred in Europe........Like $2,000 a piece.........

Anyways, these 2 dogs (which are bred bird dogs in Europe) never hunted a day in their 4 year old life. My buddy's dad convinces us to take the 2 dogs with us, because it would be good. The guy even heckled me and how they would do soooooooo much better than my lab...........

So off we go.........

The dogs don't have a clue and just followed me and my buddy, while my lab works the area. We pick off 2 birds and the dogs just didn't do a dang thing...........Not interested............

So, as we continue working, my dog flushes a skunk and being a smart dog, runs away and comes to me........Free from spray. I'm happy and my buddy runs up towards the skunk to shoot it..........

At that time, these two dogs take off after the skunk (who is trying like heck to get out of dodge), and while my buddy is yelling at them, I'm laying on the ground, crying tears, laughing soooooooo hard........

Yep, those 2 fancy dogs got sprayed!!!!!!!

Well, I loaded up my lab in the truck, told my buddy to have a nice day and went home.

He had to explain what happened his dad, because I could smell the 2 dogs from 100 yards.......That was close enough...........And no, they were not going close to my vehicle......He and the dogs walked about 1/2 mile home..........

Lotsa tomato juice!!!!!

Never did hunt with those 2 "great" dogs again........

Fishook and Big G, Those stories are GREAT!!!, Tears are flowin'! Fishook, as stated above, retrieve to hand does have its' drawbacks! Give your dog credit, He/she did as commanded. BigG, Did those fuzzy dogs get clipped? Maybe they are a SPECIAL breed, FOR skunks! Afterall, In the UK, They fish FOR carp! FUNNY!!!!

I was grouse huning once near Bemidji...And all your stories are about dogs getting sprayed... Well, I wasn't so lucky! While grouse hunting I almost stepped on one, I just didn't see it.. Needless to say I took a full shot right up the pant leg and all the way to my shirt!.. thank god it missed my face!

Not that I have to tell you this.. .But not fun!

We had a lab shepherd cross when I was in junior high & high school. One summer alone he trapped two skunks behind a globe shrub in the corner of the house & front step so he couldn't get at them. A third one he cornered in the garden near the house. Naturally every time this happened it was midnight or later. Nonstop barking & spray smell coming through the wall of the house. Had to go out & shoot them in the hiney from a few feet away in the dark with the shotgun to get them out from behind the shrubs. You bet I was extremely nervous about getting sprayed.

The dog pretty much took care of it from there. He was ferocious when he was ticked off. He never really seemed to get sprayed though.

guys this is funny

SCUMFROG if it happens once deal w/it the second time corner your buddy unless he is bigger of course.

One time while camping when I's about 9 or so folks went canoeing. (sp) back at camp watching a fire a skunk happened to try and raid our cooler. Well being young and brave (and not so bright) I took it upon myself to defend our rations. All I could find were some rocks. Well the skunk didn't survive those 50+ rocks but I don't think I need to explain the rest of the story.

After a couple days we didn't notice but on the way home we stopped at Bonanza I think there were some people in there that did. grin.gif
As they seemed to leave rather quick.

This is not about my dogs, it's about me.
Few years ago, in fall, I went outside in my garage to have a smoke.
My garage is in the basement of my 2 story house, it has a walkout door with a retaining wall next to it. I keep my dogs dog food dish right above the retaining wall. As I smoke my cigarette inside , I step outside to look.
Turn left..turn right....3 SKUNKS eating my dog food...4 feet from my face...
There should have been a camera taking shots of me, my face expression, and the 3 skunks face when they saw me, with they eyes BIG wide open just like mine....we all jumped away from each others like rockets.
I slammed door and start praying they didn't spray while I was running inside house to get my shotgun, while I am sure they 3 rascals raced for the woods scared as much as me.
Since that day, every time I smoke a cigarette in garage, I just quietly peek out of the door, looking over the retaining wall and of course the dog dish has been moved.
