bearings

Actually you need to do BOTH spool bearings. I'm not sure where you saw that one would work, but that is not correct. The spool has a shaft that it spins on and there is a bearing on each side of the shaft to hold it in place and balance it out. These are the two that affect casting and should be replaced. On some Shimano's one is in the palm plate and the other is under the tension cap. On most Daiwas one is in the palm plate and one is pinned directly on the spool shaft.

The other internal bearings are just for smoothing out the reel while cranking, which aren't too important.

So....if you only change the palm plate bearing you won't see much of an improvement, if any.

so much talk about shimano.. where's the love for Abu?? Is Shimano really that more superior than abu garcia? or any other brand for that matter? Daiwa, Fleugar, Lews... I have two Revos. an S and SX and love them both. Use them more for trolling spinners than i do casting. No aftermarket parts, but after reading up on the boca bearings.. i wanna throw them in now.

Those revos already whip baits fine. My fishing partner swaped the breaking system in his premier and it simply launches baits. However the revo is one of those reels that doesn't seem to hold up as well. If you get a good one you'll be fine, but there are plenty of revos that break the 1st year. I have never had that problem with my curados.

I personally think Shimano IS THAT much better than the ABU's. I have owned both. The ABU Winch was a favorite of mine and is a good reel. I question it's durability though. The pawl's were breaking on a lot of the revo's. I think this is one of the main reasons ABU redesigned a lot of the revos. A lot of the reels you mentioned are actually the same reel under different names. A revo, pflueger, bass pro shops, lew's and more are all made in the same factory and have interchangeable parts.

I think it makes more sense to upgrade the bearings if the ones that you are replacing are the stainless steel bearings and NOT the shimano A-RB bearings. I've seen some tests where the shimano A-RBs actually free spool as long and some times even longer than ABEC 7 bearings. The shimano A-RB bearings are good bearings and I don't see much of a performance increase unless you are upgrading to ABEC 9's or from stainless steel bearings. Which means everything Curado and down.

Also, check out biggreenfish for bearing + drag kits.
