reels for pike

Recommended Posts

I need to pick up a new reel for northerns. I want something that can hold a spool of power pro 50# with some backing. I am leaning towards an Abu Garcia Revo Winch but the 5.4:1 retrieve has me a little worried.

It should work great for cranks and bucktails but how well will this slower retrieve work for baits like the Glidin' Rap, x-rap subwalk and x-rap walk where you need to pick up extra line a bit faster?

Thanks for any replies

Curados a good reel with a 6:3:1, and with the Toros you have 3 choices, winch at 4:3, regular at 5:4 and HS at 6:3. I run both the Curado and HS but to fast for my liking on most gliders for those I prefer the 5:4 but I also run those reels on a 9' rod so helps with picking up slack.

The Revo Winch, at 5:4 to 1, is a great choice for pike. The Toro Winch, in either the 50 or 60 size, is a dandy specialized reel for muskies, but perhaps needlessly slow for general pike fishing. The Revo holds plenty of 50# braid, and it balances well with flipping sticks. ( this same setup would be great for bass fllipping and froggin'.). When properly spooled, the Revo is capable of moving lures very quickly. The Toros' footprints are just a bit too big to balance with most heavy bass rods--which is what I picture as "pike" tackle.

Here are a couple options as well depending on your price point and style...

Have you thought about the calcutta 150? I like the 50XT for certain applications...prefer a low pro baitcaster but the 50 has its place and if you want more line and weight is not a factor the 150 or 200 may work well.

If you are willing to go with a lighter bait caster you may want to consider the Daiwa Sol or a great budget friendly reel is the new BPS pro qualifier in the 5.2:1 ratio.

The winch is at 20.6 inches per turn and reels like the zillion with the 4.9:1 are at 22 inches per turn and so it is still plenty slow with power but slightly faster. I really like the crazy cranker myself as I have 3 of the zillions.

May want to consider 2 setups or just go with a longer rod as mentioned above for when you need to pick up large amounts of slack with a glide bait. Also are you planning to use the same action rod for all your lures? You going xfast with braid?

catch a lot of 50# northerns?

or do you just need some extra rope to tie the boat up with

I use my muskie rods/reels with 80 lb. braid 95% of the time I'm pike fishing, unfortunately no 80 lb. pike yet but still trying! smile

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
