Ice auger into earth auger

Anyone use their powerhead to dig post holes? Any advice? I have about 20 holes to dig and thought about buying an earth auger for my mako.

Something tells me the gearbox isn't made for hitting rocks and going through clay. Instead I would pay the little money it would cost to rent an actual earth auger.

I have used hand augers with good success.

I have used my old 8" jiffy to dig a number of post holes. Add water when you dig. Worked good for me.

use any old ice auger bit with your power head.

I have an old lazer 10 inch that i dont use on the ice any more and Idedicated that bit to the earth.

gravel with heavy rock would be a tough go, especially on a power head meant for ice, but most soils it will work. ours is sand with roots and were puting in cedar fence posts. 8 inch wasn't cutting it for some of the posts so I went to the ten inch and it works just fine.

I figure you can buy an old good running auger for less than a hundred bucks so why pay big bucks for and earth auger if you don't have to drill hundreds of holes?

Just go SLOW and do as few holes as you need to, and watch the air intake on the carb so id doesn't suck in sand or dust if it doesn't have an air cleaner.

i've been using mine for the past two years. I get a great deal on 2ft blue spruces and plant them all over in my woods. My 8" Jiffy works great I live in sand country and if I find a rock I better go buy a lottery ticket. You just have to sacrifice set of blades and remember to put new ones on before ice fishing season.

I would also suggest using a garden hose and run water in the hole to make it easier on the clutch and also watch out for tree roots they do a real dinger on your wrists when the augur catches those.

I have an old strikemaster mag lll from the eighties and have drilled alot of holes and even drilled a bunch of holes through rock.Dang thing just keeps running.I have to change the blade out after rocks cause there is not much blade left after drilling through rocks.
