Free VNC Prograrm

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any luck finding a program that works similar to VNC for free? Remote Assistance gets me by for now.. but it would be nice to be able to login w/out someone on the other end needing to be there to approve it.

Thanks!

Windows Remote Connection does work well with the Win. 7 version. Within network portal it is a two click password and after setup. Over address to address takes some setup. I used Log Me In for a couple years but you start doing remote assistance with someone who is not "tech" savy or gets worried or lost when you just tell them where to download it, Log Me In just seems to have too many steps. I would just end up having to go/drive all the way to the remote PC and setup. Plus there iPhone App is a total hit or miss. When a hit was was made, the app was just very choppy and poor. I finally tried out Team Viewer when it surpassed the ratings of Log Me In. From my local PC to the Remote PC and to the free App on my iPhone, painless and seamless. The iPhone app works almost scary good. Just last weekend I was helping a young 70's something lady with some issue when using Skype. I needed to get into her PC via remote. Within 5 minutes of saying "Cnet", "Search Team Viewer" "Download", I was in.

It is all based on a User ID and password instead addresses, network access and info, router and PC setting and anything else. It is very scary how easy you can get into a secure network and view and work remotely via this application. The remote computer just has to deny access or change the User Id or password, but they network administrator has to know to do this. wink

If you are helping someone remotely who is on a firewalled protected router/home network and or PC, knows just enough to get on the web and get in trouble, Team Viewer will save at least an hour frustration. Plus the drive time to setup Log Me In or Remote assistance.

You need Windows 7 Pro, Vista Business, or XP Pro or higher in order to be able to connect via MS Remote Desktop though. The Home versions only have the Remote Desktop client to connect to other machines.

Will MS Remote Desktop work free with an Iphone? Or is the App spendy?

I've used Log Me In for 3-4 years now, plus I use the Android App with no failures.

I can access 4 computers through it (not all at the same time), for free.

Sure, there are a couple of steps, but on the Android App you can set it up for your phone to remember all of the passwords, so it's just 2 clicks.

You can make VNC work to at least 1 computer across the internet, you can also do RDP across the internet. Your router/firewall just needs to be capable of port redirection. Most are, even my cheapo Linksys will do it.

With Log Me In, you can add as many computers as you need (I think grin) and when you log into the inlaw's computer, you can set it up to black out their screen, or they can watch the cursor move around the screen, just as if you had a tech working on your own computer while sitting around in front of it.

I find this helpful for when my mom calls up, I can log into her computer while she sits in front of the screen. I can then talk to her on the phone, while she watches what I'm doing on her computer, and she can make her own notes.

I can do it from my Droid, from my computer that's attached to our TV, from our laptop, or from the computer that's in my office, and I can access any of those with any of the above computers.
