Forums - Open Water vs. Ice Fishing

Just curious. I noticed that the ice fishing forum has almost twice as many posts as the open water forum. Does this mean that there is more interest in ice fishing than open water fishing? Perhaps it's because most folks are holed up at home and on the computer during the winter months??

Also, there's more posts in football than baseball. I find this odd when the Twins are having a good season and football hasn't really started yet. Is football the more popular sport?

The OPP Forum is the "hot" forum lately. EVERY topic that involves ANY bit of controversy or discussion seems to get moved there.

My opinion is that it is the anticipation of the next thing to come!

As the ice season winds down, people are getting cabin fever, itching for open water, getting the boat out, and all things related. The fish are still biting, but they want to move on into a different mode.

There is the hunting seasons comming up, upland and waterfowl. Deer season, archery and firearm, traplines that some will run,
the holiday season, something is always just around the corner!

Anticipation...I believe that is what it is!

Exactly! Who wants to be on da PC when the bass are blowing up on topwaters, Huge pike are smacking spoons, lunker eyes are feeding under the full moon, whopper musky are chomping bucktails, etc.... I love icefishin' too but there is the problem of it getting dark too early, so most of the time on weeknights in the winter, the only place to wet a line is right here on FishingMinnesotadotcom

Hey, good to see you too! OK I confess, I am , but due to lack of daylight in the afternoons, I must get my fix in on the weekend hence my higher number of posts on the ice forum vs. the Open water forum.
Well, summer camp is over after this week, we will have to get out some time. Planning any metro fishing minnesota outings?

I believe it's because Ice Fishing is Minnesotas favorite sport! Look at this in the summer you drive by a popular lake and see say 15-20 boats out when the bite is on on a weekend. Well in the winter when the bite is on there could be couple hundred houses in a little town and at night on a weekday 90% of them will have a lite on. Think it might also have to do with that not as much is going on in the winter giving people more free time to go fishin.

Here is something else that might be a factor....for those without boats, the hard water time makes the lakes accessable to everyone.

And, I for one think that the set up and take down in the winter is much easier then in the summer, especially if you are alone. This was driven home a few weeks ago when I tried to load my boat alone on Bowstring, at an eastern launch, with a western wind...no way. On the second attempt, I helped a guy load his and he helped me with mine. I don't know, just seems easier? I fish alot more in the winter then in the summer.

I agree with the Grebe. I think ice fishing is easier to afford, participate in, etc. I love both, but until this year didn't have a boat of my own so ice fishing was always my favorite. It was the only time I could get away from the shore. Now that I have a boat it's hard for me to say. I probably still have an affection for the ice though. It's a lot quieter in the winter too! A few snomobiles but not all the recreational boaters to deal with.

As far as football vs. baseball. For me it's not contest. I've always been a huge Vikings fan. It doesn't matter what kind of year either team is having. I bleed purple. Go Vikes!!!!

I forgot to mention that you guys are right it can be easier to fish on ice. It is also cheaper well not always but it can be to get out from shore. A five gallon bucket to sit on is cheaper than a boat.
