Ice out muskies

Recommended Posts

Heading down to Iowa tomarrow to try to get this itch under controll. Any pointers for ice out muskies. The ice is 3/4 out. I'm thinking slow with plastics and topwater/glidders. I'm a bucktail person but I don't think that will work.

The way that things are going up here in MN, we'll be asking the same question...

I guess I don't really have a clue.. Maybe slow down and try some small spinners, glide baits and bass size spinnerbaits. Rattle traps seem to work in KY and Ohio from what I hear.. If it were me, I would probably troll open water and breaks. Maybe look for rivers and streams flowing into lakes.

Don't be afraid to go small. Springtime, muskies WILL chow on 5'' senkos, #9 shad raps, #5 colorado single blade spinners, 4'' grubs, and jointed original rapala floaters down to the smallest size available.. and that's just my personal list of incidental pre-season musky action I've personally witnessed (either myself or a boat partner) while out after bass and pike.
