I dont think anyone is saying salt is a great way to do it. It's just that it isn't the end of the world. Yes there are lots of shacks on some lakes, but probably not too many that get stuck. If its your last resort for some reason (lets say you are far from anything more than a gas station and have no jacks or chisels), it might be better than having the house fall in the drink when the ice thaws.

So if you leave your house out too long, the DNR comes and takes it. So what happens if its frozen in really bad? For argument sake, lets say, REALLY BAD, water over floors frozen in.

We could stop salting and just buy everyone snow tires with the money we would save. Heck, we wouldn't even need to plow the roads if the state bought snow plows for everyone's trucks and cleaned the roads as they made their normal trip to work. No salt needed, period.

Snow plows don't clean ice.

I like the snow tire idea though. I run snow tires and there is a HUGE difference.

The morning rush hour with 50,000 studded snow tires would sound like a migration of angry locusts or an alien invasion of some type. Studded tires would saw groves right in the interstate in short order.

But I do understand the logic and the argument on snow tires being permitted again in most regions. There would be far fewer SUV's is studded tires were used on FWD cars and vans. Less salt requires, fewer fender benders too.
