"weak" shooting .22

Recommended Posts

So I was recently handed down a .22 pump from my grandpa. I cleaned it up and decided to head out and shoot a few rounds through it. Well long story short my dad and I found that from 12 yards the bullets bounced off an old full body goose decoy. My dad then shot it at a farther target and about 50 yards and said he seen the bullet drop before it hit the target. shocked

These are the same shells that where shooting just fine out of a rugar 10/22

Anyone got any ideas???

First thing that comes to mind is to stop shooting it until you figure it out. My guess is something is fouling the barrel and slowing them way down. Only other option would be some sort of blow out that is allowing the gas to escape back through the action. Check for rust or gunk in the barrel. Best bet is to take it to a gunsmith and have them check it out, or hang it on the wall and leave it there for keepsake purposes only.

Do not fire another round out of that gun. Something is causing a pressure loss only a certified gunsmith should be consulted to see whether its barrel is shot out or if your a getting an incomplete sealing of the chamber. Bring the gun along with your ammo when you take it in.
