Got a 38lb male this morning!

Recommended Posts

Mitch and I went out this morning to try for a couple more and if we would of brought a shotgun we would of had a truck full.

We hit 2 spots that were duds. No howling or animals seen. Then we hit one of our better spots were I had a double earlier this year. We had to set up on the North side of some big snow piles which put us out in the open but I decided to give it a try. Called off and on for 45 minutes with nothing. We

were just about to get up when a pack lit up a mile away. We're listening but nothing. I go to get up and one starts barking then the whole pack joins in not 300 yards away in the brush. They must of seen us out there and I tried to persuade a couple of them to show but no such luck.

4th set: We head to a spot we've never hunted but the last 2 times out I heard them howling in there. We set up facing West, overlooking a 40 acre field. Mit wanted the downwind so I sat a about 30 yards upwind of him. I let out a howl and a pack sounds off straight West of us in the woods. I howl a couple more times and sit back and watch. 10 minutes go by and I see two swinging downwind past Mitch. I'm waiting for a shot, none. I see the first one disappear South of him and the others right behind. Still no shot. I'm thinking he fell asleep. Now the other starts heading South so I bark it to stop and raise up to clear a hill and take a long poke. It turns to run, then Mitch shoots.

Both misses. Not one our better performances.

5th set: We're a bit disgusted so we head to a new spot. It's an abandoned farm, kinda close to the road with a lot of machinery scattered around and to the South is a dead end road about 300 yards away. We sit down facing East with our backs to an abandoned truck. I've got the decoy and caller directly East of us about 30 yards out. The wind is blowing a bit harder from the North so I'm expecting anything that comes will swing out in front and downwind. I start with some howls then some more. I look over at Mitch and see him nodding off. I figure what the heck, throw on pup distress for a couple minutes, wait 5 then we'll head for home. I look to the left and see two,50 yards out, running hard from the North right at the decoy. Then two more come running between two cars right by us 25 yards out and hook towards the decoy. They're running in circles around it and of course the scope is on 8 power. I finally get on one and shoot. It runs 30 yards farther and drops. Another stops by it and just as I go to shoot Mitch shoots and off they go. I see one go by some brush 200 yards out barking. It stops, I shoot and wing it. I tracked that one for over a half mile but lost it in a swamp. Mitch just grazed his. Pretty pathetic. Seven coyotes in two sets and we come home with one. Glad this day's over with. Maybe we'll have a little better luck tonight.

Congrats - got me beat by a pound! I will have to dig pics up, had a rug made out of mine.

Had the deer rifle instead of the shotgun today and it cost me an up personal meeting with a yote - still dont regret the rifle decison for where I was Will try tomorrow with the new snow.

Found out a .204 can put a big hole in a yote - they are paired up bigtime.

Cooter,

This time of year they're not to bashful about charging your location. We had 4 charge us last week and called in a couple more, that had we waited would have been in easy shotgun range. I brought both guns to the last sets we did and that created it's own set of problems but with a little practice I think it may pay off. I've heard good and bad with the .204 about putting holes in them. I've only used my 17 REM's and my son shoots his 223 and for coyotes both work great as far as holes go but I do know my 17 really tore up two of the fox I took with broadside shots this year. The frontal shot one you couldn't even see a blood spot until I hung it up.

Grayfox - we were running them with hounds, I happened to be right where one decided to run. Haven't gotten the calls out yet but this morning on the way to work the fields right around home were absolutely littered with fresh tracks.

We ended up with a male on Sat and another male yesterday. 3 other chases that we had to end as the yotes made it into sections we don't have permission to hunt.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
