Humm. Ice 45 ?s

SFC

Question

Was out fishing today, marking fish from 12 feet to the bottom which was 24' it was lit up. All the sudden the digital display showed 12' no fish, turned it off auto to the next 2 depth settings nothing changed. Shut the unit off, checked to make sure ducer was below ice, cleaned ducer. Turned on it is working again, now at times the big digital display shows varying depths like 14' 16' most times it seemed to coincide with the depth of my lure the smaller depthreading around the outside stayed consitent the rest of the day. Checked the connections, switched beams, which helped for awhile, battery showed 90%. Why would the big digital display be jumping from 12 to 20 feet at different times & at times be working fine. No one else on the lake also checked all connections.

It was marking alot of fish, I was kinda thinking the same thing. First year flasher owner, I couldnt beleave the number of fish that were stacked up. If not for the flasher and a spring bobber I probably would of caught no fish.

I had a similar thing happen to my ice 45. My LCD display read correctly but the flasher part would bounce around to shallower depths than the correct bottom depth. I messed with the transducer connection and swithed it on/off which helped. I emailed humminbird about my problem and they told me to send it in for them to fix. So I'm waiting to get it back now.

If you have the Gain set too high it is possible to fool a flasher to mark a suspended target as bottom. That could be a lure, weed, or fish.

The flasher could mark this lure as constant bottom or it will do it intermittently when you lift of drop a lure it changes the profile of the lure and bounces back a stronger return signal.

In a nutshell, Less is More when adjusting gain. If you can mark your lure as the weakest color in this case green you can rest assured that anything that enters your cone angle will not go by unnoticed whether that be baitfish or fish. Gain set this way will mark anything entering or leaving the outside ( weakest part of the signal) of the cone angle as green.

As a fish moves in closer the signal will then turn yellow and eventually red(strongest return color) when its dead on your lure.

So as you can see your flasher is telling you more then if there are fish below you, its telling when they enter that cone angle, when they are right below and hot on your lure and when they leave. That can tell the mood of that fish and when they begin to leave its time to call them back.

I understand how to read a flasher and use the gain. My problem was happening with no fish on the screen and in 21 fow it would bounce up to 12-14 on the flasher but the LCD would still read 21 ft. It was the first time using my ice 45. I really liked the adjustable zoom and the large display. Still have my fl-8 as a back up unit that I've been using while the bird is getting fixed.

Pretty much confirmed today I dont have a problem. Did the same thing today but only when marking alot of fish and had to have the gain turned up to mark a very small lure. Had the camera down today, fish everywhere plus lots of little bugs that they were feeding on. When the fish thinned out the large display stayed on the correct depth. Thanks for the replies.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
