Turkey Fan Question. An Update.

They'll all probably get the job done, just a matter of preference. Each one will put out a different tone. The glass are known for their high frequency and will reach out longer distances. One of my bread and butter slates is a Frictionite. I can get some really sweet yelps out of it. Try out a bunch in the store and see what sounds/works best for you. Maybe buy a calling DVD as well if you don't have much experience. Most turkey hunters will carry several calls, including diaphrams, slates, & boxcalls. It's good to have a variety because you never know what the birds will like on any given day.

The slate faced slate calls are most forgiving for the beginner. Glass can be a bit tougher to play and tends to require more conditioning.

I'd also look into a boxcall. They are also pretty easy to learn to play and are very realistic.
