Question about stingers...

Looking in the manual it says something to the effect that an angler may fish with only one hook unless fishing with an artificial lure. I see some people saying that they add stingers when fishing live bait with a jig. Is that legal?

Most of these anglers are adding a pc of cloth or plastic similar to the blade on a "Swedish pimple".This does in fact make it legal to use and a very effective set up when the times are right.

So the blade makes it "artificial"? Wish I would have asked this yesterday. I fed at least 4 fish a nice shiner dinner last night on hits I thought were gonna pay off! I saw on another board where a guy said he always used a stinger when fishing with jigs and shiners cause the hook wasn't really the right size for this kind of bait, and my experience from yesterday had me thinking the same thing.

You don't need to put a blade on your stinger to make it legal!!!! As long as the stinger is not longer than three inches it's alright.

A jig is an artificial lure that your tipping with a minnow. Anytime you put something on a hook, it becomes a lure. Lead included.

Is it still legal if you have a plain hook with a stinger ? Like a "Quick strike" rig for muskies.I understand that a jig head is a lure and a stinger is legal,but on a plain hook I thought you had to have a "teaser" if you will,in order for it to be considered a lure.

I was going to call the DNR on this very issue. Nothing in the regs.

I have seen some things I thought were illegal in stores, but if Gander Mt and Fleet Farm sell it, it must be legal? Dubuque rigs, used for walleyes, is like a drop shot rig, but they use a jig you bait as the bottom weight, and a hook half way up.

The other is all the makers of quick strike rigs do not use a little flasher-like you get with the Swedish Pimple.

I was wanting to know as I was making some homemade quick strike rigs and want them to be legal. When crimping wire, it is a pain to redo them!

Just because a store may have it on their shelves does'nt mean it's legal! All the statutes are availiable online thru a link off of the DNR HSOforum, and this is covered fairly well. QS rigs must be equiped with a doodad of some kind to make it what would be then considered a lure, this 'attracter' must be within 3 inches of hook. That Dubuque rig would be illegal on most MN waters. You can only use 1 hook or artificial lure on your line in MN. Red river is an exception, here that Dubuque rig, pickeral rigs, ect. would be legal to use. I use variations of the Dubuque rig on the Red, as well as sometimes trolling a 3way rig with a crank and a spoon....Effective, and sometimes you catch 2 fish, 1 on each lure!

Walleyehawk, next time you are in need of wire for whatever reason maybe try American fishing wire. They have some 49 strand stuff that is way slick, you can tie a few different knots in this stuff. No more little sleeves to lose and fumble with, and I think knots are much more secure than the crimps. Try it I think you'll like it. I gave away all my 7 strand and crimps since discovering this stuff.

Quick strike rigs are different, you do need to add a bead or spinner to make them legal.

This might be a stupid question but, please bare with me.... Can a crawler harness have 3 single hooks or just 2 ???

I've always fished them with 3 hooks...
It was brought to my attention the other night that what I was doing was NOT leagle...

I looked in the regs and found nothing....

It's like the new lawn fertlizer regs. You can buy fertlizer with phosphrous but you're not sposed to use it.

I was kind of surprised when I saw those Dubuque rigs. But they were on sale and thought that was why. And you could take the components and use them seperately.But when all of the quick strike rigs were "illegal" I thought maybe they changed the rule.

I just wonder if the store would pay the penalty if you got cited. I know they would not, but maybe they should stick to the legal stuff, or place a warning "not legal in Minnesota". I mean it was 6-7 different quick strike setups.

I think the three hook crawler harness' are OK because all three hooks are within a three inche span.

Three hooks on a spinner rig is legal. If two is then so is 3. I'm not sure how far you can go on this but I wouldn't push it past 3.
It makes it legal b/c of beads and a spinner blade. (not just a plain hook)
A jig is legal b/c of the lead head being artificial. (as someone stated)
A crankbait is legal b/c of some of the same things, its mainly wood or plastic and colored.

This was under my understanding of the law. Hope this clears it up a little.

Another related question I've always wondered:
I can't use a treble hook unless it's on a lure because technically they qualify as more than one hook. BUT, if I put a small blade on it, and call it a quick-strike rig I can use two or three of them? Am I not technically fishing with like eight hooks then?

You see a lot of good questions come up here from guys who just want to fish within the law ... I think the powers that be here should look into getting a CO on-line for like an hour-long live chat where we could ask some questions that often come up... it would be interesting stuff and I'm sure the DNR would be interested in promoting its rules to more anglers ... Just a thought!
