Tip-up question

After losing several pike using tip-ups with a single hook, I've been trying out quick-strike rigs. But I've never gotten a single flag on them. Do you just tie the quick-strike directly to the tip-up line, or should I be using a leader perhaps? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

The quick strikes are nice, but maybe try a single treble hook. Just make sure that you put a bead or blade above the leader and you will be legal. I put two d-ring clevus above the leader and then I can make any color adjustments for the blades. I found the single treble easier to set the hook because I don't have to wait for the northern to turn the bait before setting the hook. I have been doing this for at least 5 years and have never had a fish gut the hook.

Here's a simple setup I picked up on after watching some guys ice numerous large pike in SD. They tied up a 6" leader and hung from it a daredevil. Hang a large sucker from the treble and you are good to go. I have found a hammered gold/orange to work the best. Adds alot of extra flash to attract the fish and easy hookups with the treble. Anyone else use this setup?

A rig I have been playing with and found productive is a bit odd, yet it works great.

I start with a 18" steel leader, an off the shelf quality leader, then I add a single 6 - 8 O/T Gami circle hook, and also attach a 2 O/T Mustad® Double Live Bait Hook to the snap.

The Mustad® Double Live Bait Hook is a pin style hook so you insert the Herring or whatever onto the pin and snap it closed. The single Circle hook will go through the nose of the bait at the top of the rig.

The bait stays firmly in place, and the hook up rate is high, with low mortality for CPR purposes.

One thing to remember when bringing in a fish is you still need to let them run. The drag is your hands when tipup fishing. Just hand over handing them in you will lose fish as the hook or hooks pop, especially the big ones. Gotta play them.

i always use a single hook have not had too many get off. i let them run for half a min give them a good hook set, then as stated above feel how big the fish is and go from there. If your just hauling the fish in your going to lose fish.

I never liked using a trebel but thats just me
