For those of you without a shelter

There are lots of ideas that might work, but they seem to rack up the $$$.

I'm not sure what you financial situation is, but a nice hub style shelter doesn't cost all that much. ($150-$200). They fold up small enough that it should be able to fit in the foot area of the back seat in your car (does a rabbit even have a backseat?). Then you can throw a blanket over it to conceal it. This should solve 90% of your issue.

Mr. heaters are a little pricey, but the sunflower heaters are pretty cheap ($30 i think). This will solve another 9% of your issues. Then your only left with 1% of actually finding fish. But at least you'll be warm.

If you're driving out, you should be set. If you're walking a sled would be nice, but will take up some space. There are some pretty small sleds out there though.

Hey Crm7290,

I see that you spend a lot of time skiing, so you know how to dress for that. The big difference between ice fishing and skiing is the amount of moving around you do on a continuous basis. Ice fishing is a pretty stationary activity, skiing requires a lot of movement and activity from you. That's good for 10-20 degrees of warmth, so you'll have to wear more clothes when you're fishing than when you're skiing.

My dad and uncle and I were talking about this last time we were all out fishing. My dad said that at his age (56) he'd rather have a hand auger and a shelter than a power auger and sit on the ice.

As far as the alcohol goes, that'll make you FEEL warmer, but it won't actually make you warmer. In the winter, that can be dangerous. So, keep an eye on it. Also, just becuase you turn 21 doesn't mean you're out of the woods as far as alcohol and the law goes. There are still things like DWI/ DUI and being in control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated. (That's the charge they get people on who are sleeping a buzz off in the back seat with the keys in their pocket.)

An inexpensive shack or more clothes are (IMO) probably the two best pieces of advice I saw reading through this thread. And warming up in your car is a good idea, too. (In high school, we used to actually just drill the holes close and fish out of the downwind side of the car.) Maybe buy a couple of tip-ups to watch, then you're still fishing.

When I was young and broke I took 3 sheets of plywood about 4' by 2' and hinged them so I had a 3 sided wind block. I then would take a coffee can and poke some holes on the bottom sides and put charcoal in it and burn it. It would go in a hole about 5" deep next to my fishing hole and I would chisel a lil troft connecting the two holes. This served as a hand warmer and the heat of the can melted ice into my fishing hole keeping it open.

Good warm hat, gloves and boots is key.

I'll vouch for the "fishing out of the truck" method. Even though I have a couple of Otter shelters, there are times, when I'm first looking for a hot hole to set up on, the weather's nice, or I'm just flat out too lazy. Fishing out of the driver's side, I'll always have the wind hitting the passenger's side. I'll leave the door open and let the truck run with the heater on full blast. As bassfshin24 said bank up some snow to block the hole from wind. Works for me at times. You can even listen to the radio!

Its ok to drill right next to the car? I keep my car a good ways away from where the holes are thinking that it would be a weak spot in the ice... I might just crank the heated seats, the heat, and drill some holes. Thats some good advice.

I already have my flasher and thats the expenditure for the season. I generally fish with friends in portables anyway so this is generally a nonissue, but like yesterday that friend brought out two females (one who screamed watching the camera... It got worse when the panfish got up the hole....) so I was chilling outside. Not that thats really a problem I was jsut wondering what I could do to stay warmerer.

My wife bought me the smallest Otter sled along with other ice fishing gear for Xmas. That thing is just big enough to snugly hold my mr. buddy heater, hand crank auger, bait bucket/seat, small tackle box, rods, misc. gear. It's really not that big and I'd bet you could get a pop-up shelter into it too if intersted in that option. That's what I'd consider. I've lived in appartments too and believe me, if you packed everything into your small sled, I'd bet you could find some corner to keep it in.

Also, what about fishing with tip ups while sitting in your car those days? Or better yet, take the rabbit in to the shop and see if they can cut a hole in a strategic spot in the floor and then install a hole cover? : )
I thought about doing that with a van and putting those low rider air shock systems in it. VW rabbit with air shocks I like it.

I should slam it and put some holes in the bottom. But I dont think the dealer would like that very much.

I might try the tip ups, at least one of them at some point but who actually uses tip ups for pannies?

I cant get out until next week unfortunately to go fishing. Leaving for the cities tomorrow and have homework on already. Oh well. Its all about the football this weekend.

I live in a college town and dont have friends with actual houses. Ive filled the majority of corners with fishing gear already. Ill have to wait until next year for my shelter unless people think the pak shak is worth buying for 50 dollars

I'd reccomend a Pak Shack until you can afford something else. Beats the heck out of cardboard, thats for sure. If there is wind make sure to set up with your back to it, and you'll be fine for the most part. It also is very light and portable which is another big plus.

My thoughts are the same as Lightin BG's.

Get a hub shelter and the smallest tub or even a plastic tub from Big M for $10. If you watch the sales you can find a Clam expedtion for $99. The hubs can be a little tricky in the wind setting up and down but came be done. A good 6" Lazer hand auger and you be set.

I have a lazer 8 inch auger already. I wanted the 6 but they didnt have them and I got it with a gift card.

I fished out of a clam the other day. With two people setting it up its pretty awesome. I imagine it was do-able alone. If I can find one for 100 I will snatch it up fast.

Are there any other cheap shelters to look at?

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
