How deep on a tip up

How deep do you put your bait when using tip ups. I usually use a sucker minnow and have set them anywhere from just below the ice to the bottom and I have had one small pike on thats it. Whats the secret I set them out everytime I fish and I usually just end up getting my hands cold putting them away empty. Thanks for any advice.

First of all, start using deadbait. Ciscos, smelt, herring. They outfish live suckers 4:1 in my experience. If all if all I have out are two tip-ups, one is half way down and the other a foot or two off the bottom. If you're getting so few flags, even with live suckers, it's probably because you're not in a good pike location.

I have had real good luck with large shiners this year. The problem is that its hard to find them.

about 2 feet off bottom around ,eeper part of lake or structure,shiner on a red or white glow ,size 7,adjust up or down a foot every once in a while, hook in the tail works,dead bait too

I go 4 or 5 feet off the bottom and catch alot of pike with plain old live suckers.

Shiners have always been better on tip ups than suckers for me. I vary my depth of tip ups as well. Anywhere from half way down to 2ft off the bottom.

My rule of thumb is half way down in the water column, if I'm fishing in 20ft then I go 10ft off bottom, if I'm in 30ft I put them 15ft off the bottom, if I'm in 10 ft I put them 5 ft off the bottom.

Produces bigger fish. haha
