Broken Clam Command Post

I purchased a Command Post thermal 3 weeks ago and its fourth time out when packing up 3 of the hubs broke. The metal plate on the inside of the shelter literally cracked and chunked off. To say the least I am incredibly disappointed. I was one of the first to buy one this year and had lots of hope for ice fishing. Now I'm shelterless.

I followed the directions and the videos from Clam. Is anyone else having problems with them this year? Cabela's gave me my money back, but they didn't have anymore in stock.

I had exactly the same thing happen to my command post as well. Cabelas refunded my money and i bought a flip-over instead. I would like a pop-up again sometime for being lighter and less space-consuming, but the thing was brand new. If it was my fault it could be that I may not have collapsed the roof right, and thats why the thing snapped in half, but I was being very gentle either way.

I did keep my money with Clam Corp and went with the Denali II, which has been awesome thus far. Just have been using it for different situations than the command post would have been, but very luxiourious to fish from, thats for sure.

I picked up a command post the first year (black roof) and it's still holding up well considering my abuse. My wife and I had to stitched up the corners of the tent a bit to keep the skirt from getting ripped off and last season I epoxied all of the grommets into the skirt to keep them from falling out. Other than that, it has been a good tent. I beat the heck out of it, often leave it setup in crazy windy conditions and frequently have it freeze down requiring it to be yanked and chipped from the ice.

From my experience, the double command post style hubs are far easier to pack than the more square models are.

i purchased a Clam Summit last year and had one of the hubs break the third time out. They are very touchy regarding folding back up. Clam was very good about just replacing the house, and am happy to say that i have used it several times over the holidays with no trouble. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Had a summit. Past Saturday, one of my hub metal center piece literally warped out of shape on one of the ball joints and in the process, broke the piece that keeps it in. It still worked but returned and exchanged for a summit thermal since it was semi-clearanced $50 off.

I'm not sure how that happens. No matter how you bend those plastic poles I just don't think you can generate enough leverage to warp the metal piece. The clam houses seem to be very well made so I'm sticking with it and hoping that it's just a boo-boo and the summit thermal I have now will cooperate.

I've heard Clam's Customer service is really good, but after having so many break I felt like mine was a lemon. Otherwise, I would have just ordered the parts.

I'm giving it a second chance. Thorne bros still had a couple in stock, but they are selling fast.

i just lasered some .100 stainless rings with a quarter inch hole in the center to replaced the cheap potmetal type ones that broke. They will never break. The pole will give before the stainless. I know to clam will give you a new piece if it breaks. They did for a guy I know. He had to go down there though.

How long has Frabill been making pop-ups? 2 years? Ed? smile ... Just sayin'.

2 years on the retail market..3 years in the field, with staff testing.

And...in that 2 years..Just how many.."I have problem X-Y- or Z with my Frabill Hub Shack" posts have you seen?...Just say'n.

Clam has mailed me a seat mount tube for a flipover before free of charge, and they asked no questions on why I needed it. Just said that they hoped it would work out for me. Very friendly and helpful. Thats why, as I said above, I wanted to stick with clam.

I liked how the thermal was too, but did not like all the light that it let in. I used to sight fish trout all the time, and would still like to a couple times this winter if i get the chance. The thermal material is not ideal for that.

All I meant was that I thought it misleading/incomplete to say "My Frabill pop-up has never failed" in the whole 2 seasons a retail consumer could have used it.

I have never used one so if it sounded like bashing, my post failed. Either way, they look sharp and I suspect I would like the black fabric better than any other color. As far as personal experience goes, I do see many more Clam and Ekimo hubs on the ice.

In that case let me be the first smile My roommate purchased that Frabil 6 man popup and we had it up on LOW this past weekend. 1st setup on the ice. 2 windows cracked, and the lic plate holder cracked to pieces. 2nd time he set it up... another window cracked. Sure is nice they have the velcro'd in windows for easy replacement.

On a side note.. my Yukon TCX worked flawless all weekend smile

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
