Shinners, Shinners, Shinners....

I have had no trouble finding shinners. I netted about 10-15 dozen last year and kept them alive til the end of June. So, might be where you are at too. They should start running at 55-60˚. So, about opener??

The past few years there seems to have been a lack of shiners. I was told by a resort owner it had to do with the strange winters we have been having, that the people who get them have been off on the times when they should be able to collect them. Any truth to that and how does this year look? I have started to use artificial a bit more the past few years but when it is a thought bite nothing seems to work for me like a good ol'shiner....

Bait dealers sometimes miss the main run when the shiners come to shore to spawn. I helped run bait traps. Now days I go out a catch my own minnows. fatheads, shiners, and creekchubs/redtails. This year i'm catching big suckers for trapping and fishing.

My theory is that if we have a stretch of warm weather in the spring and the water warms faster than normal, the shiner run is shorter. In turn we get fewer shiners. I'm just talking about spot-tail shiners.
