Chipper vs. Shaver

I need a complete new drill assembly for my Strikemaster. I had a Lazer 9" (3 blade with power point) and was thinking of downsizing to either an 8" or even a 6". But what type? Chipping blades or shaving (lazer style) blades?

Your thoughts?

ETA: I use this auger for fishing from a large portable. Call it " very casual" run & gun.

it all depends on how you fish and if you plan to re open holes.

also chippers only come in 8 or 10 inch so if you want a 6 inch then you would have to go with a lazer. I know of a shop that has both styles on special. give me your email address and I can give you the info.

I agree with snooze i got both styles and use the chipper about 95% of the time because sharpening or replacing blades gets old, also where I fish alot of the lakes get hit hard so you are usually redrilling someones old holes. I will say this the shaver cuts faster, but my Eskimo that I got this year may even be faster

It depends on the type of fishing you do. I like to run and gun a lot. Many times I'll fish a hole for 5 or 10 minutes at the most and move on if I don't see anything. Often times I'll cut 5 or 6 holes and maybe only fish one or two before moving to a completely different spot. This continues sun-up to sun-down. I would never get a chipper blade for myself. I want something that cuts through the ice FAST. That said, my fishing is done almost exclusively in northern MN and Canada where the ice is very clean. A set of blades can easily last me a few years. I think I'm on year 4 with my current set and they are still cutting great. You just have to be VERY careful with them. There are only a few people I will let use my auger, and most of them only then when I am supervising.

Now, if I fished more in southern and western MN where the ice is dirtier, or if I only drilled a half dozen holes a day and reopened a lot of holes I would go with a chipper for sure. Its kind of a trade-off, and only you can really know what is best for you. From what you describe, fishing out of a large portable, I would probably lean towards the chipper.....

I have the 8.25 chipper and a 6" lazer. When I'm panfishing and drilling lots of holes searching for active fish I use the 6" if it's super cold out and I'm being mobile but not as much I use my chipper. Traffic on the ice is another thing... Lots of sand and dirt from trucks out there....chipper will stand up to it far better.
