fire29
We just started spearing this year and have had fish come to the edge of the ice and either look then leave or just leave. Are we doing something wrong? What could be spooking them? We usally have 2 suckers down at a time, and drop a decoy evry now and then. Laska
Could be he just wasnt interested, or you have some glare coming from somewhere that he saw or you moved somehow while he was coming in, or you need to wear pit juice cuz he smelled ya j/k
ac777
I would always keep a decoy down no matter what, and jig it occasionally. I usually don't use a sucker, unless I have access to one, most place around here dont sell them.
Gordie
try one sucker and one fake decoy also I would almost bet you have some type of glare going on that is spooking the pike it doest take much to spook them but then there are times when I've opened the door and look down and bam pike in the hole but usually not for long. gatorslayer
My gramps never used live bait while spearingand was very successful, I usually use both and I put the 'fake" decoy a couple inches below the sucker (the bigger the better) . Dropping that decoy down will spook em every time.the more you pull on the fake decoy the faster they come in so keep that to a minimum. Remember the less noise and movement from above the better. BOUNCED
Quit putting so much down the hole. I would run one decoy and keep it still. I wouldn't sweat it much yet I find them spooky early season alot.
fire29
O.K. thanks for your thoughts. I am spearing out of a quickfish 3, there are a few spots where light sneaks in but it is not terrible. And the spots are very small. I will try to button it up a little more. Laska
I spear outta quickfish too, the light leak you have shouldnt be the problem maybe add a fancy floor to it so its really dark in there, then look down the n see how much better it is... browning_gold
I agree with elwood that using one sucker is your best bet. Some times it is best to use no suckers. I do not like suckers that swim all the time because they can either spook the northerns or cause the fish to come in way to fast
MJ1657
I like to use a weighted pin to keep them under control.
