chest freezer in unheated garage in minnesota?

tbone4

Question

Hey, I recently bought a used chest freezer and the only place to put it is in an unheated enclosed garage. I would say that the freezer is about 20-25 years old. Last night, the temperature outside got down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Do you think that the freezer will work in the garage or am I out of luck? I have read that the compressor oil gets too cold to work. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Our chest freezer is at least 25 years old and it has spent it's entire life in unheated garages in 2 different houses. Never had it serviced for any reason and it's still going strong. It's always been on a sheet of plywood, not on the concrete floor. I was told that would help prevent corrosion on the feet & frame.

i have had my large chest freezer in our garage for years also. works just fine. i dont have plywood on the bottom, but it's a good idea. mine is sitting on its original styrofoam[although much thinner now]. not by design but i was alone when i placed it in it's location and too lazy to take it out. so maby its working on the same principle as plywood. good luck.
