Pretty close...All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have ONE OF THE FOLLOWING

1) complete name and address

2) driver’s license number

3) the nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height.

I printed out my DNR number, then laminated it, then slid that into the pocket, that most houses have on the front, or door, as shown.

that is not my new laminated number, but my old way of using a marker, the moisture fades the marker, thats why I had it laminated, now its good for years

Ive always been told you only need to display info if you leave your house unattended. Ive never had any problems, and I havent displayed anything the last 3 years.

What you have been told is incorrect. From pages 61 of the 2010 regulations:

Shelters (fish houses and dark houses)

The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesota

waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.

• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the

(

1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the

nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches

in height.

The rest about requiring a license for shelters left unattended overnight is on pages 61 and 64 in the regs manual.

I did the same as everyone else and just printed it off my computer and slid it in a ziplock back into that sleeve next to the door. I've never been asked or hassled the previous year when I didn't have it but it's a regulation that I'm aware of so I'm following it. I've heard rumors in the past of people getting warnings on lakes and CO's returning the next weekend and ticketing them all and it's over $100... I've got better things to do with $100 if I can keep it by printing a $.02 piece of paper. Also I use DNR number to limit amount of personal info on my ice house.

Yep, many guys don't have labels up but it is absolutely the law (as shown above). it took me literally 2 minutes on a computer and I was legal. I put the paper in a plastic sleeve used for 3 ring binders and taped off the open edge. I'm going on my second year and it looks like it did the day I put it in there. I too just put my 9 digit DNR number, it's the shortest form of ID you can legally have on your house so why bother with an address?

I took a silver paint pen after mine. Put a piece of tape on it to stay straight and wrote the numbers on. Wokred good but they never come if and if you plan on selling it later its a bad deal. I can't get the dump to take mine after I'm done with them. grin

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
