Can my son shoot another deer?

He is legal,

Plain as day, read the regs. The only thing he cannot do is hunt alone and tag another deer in a lottery area. If you are both going in a managed area, he can shoot whatever he would like. His buck was not a legal buck so unless he registered it as a mature buck, he can still take one in the ML season. Email the DNR, they get back very quickly. Please post the response on here. This will help some of us "Schmucks" understand the rules.

Some of you are thinking of how it was a couple years ago, that has changed. Minnesota has went to bag limits which changes the either sex tag. You don't only get one either sex tag anymore, you can get one for every season, but you can only tag one mature buck however, using one of those tags.

P.S. In this instance, age doesn't matter either.

i dont understand why everyone says he cant shoot a buck. He hasnt tagged a buck yet, he is DONE in the lottery zone yes, but can still hunt legally in managed and intensive. If you see the bag limits above that sniper posted he can shoot one deer in lottery so he is done there. he can shoot 2 deer in the managed with any combination of licenses he hasnt tagged a buck so he can still shoot a buck, and buy a bonus tag for a doe.

Per the DNR, direct from "Kevin". Here is their response.

You both will need the muzzleloader license and you both can take an either sex deer in the managed area. And if you’d like you both can purchase bonus permits to take an additional antlerless only deer in the managed area. Your son filled his one deer in a one deer lottery area, so he can still take 2 more deer in the 2 deer managed area. Either sex because he has not taken a buck. Good Luck. Kevin

In summary, he is perfectly legal to shoot whatever he wants in a managed area. BTW, the response time on the answer was under an hour, great job by the MN DNR. Also, some of us on here really do understand the regs, partly, because of all the discussion that takes place on here. I have a better undertanding of the regs because of these forums and the answers from the DNR that these forums bring about. The DNR does frequent this site and has made changes to the wording based on misunderstanding or unclear guidelines, it has been a place they have gotten feedback to find areas of confusion. which, evidently, are still out there.

I think the only exception to your statement would be that he can still party hunt in a lottery area, but that is whole new issue.

So,Let's say I but a regular season license and a muzzleloader license in early September. I shoot a doe in a lottery area using the anterless permit I applied for and got. I can now go to a managed area and shoot both a buck and a doe in muzzleloading season, provided I buy the bonus permit?

100% legal, No doubt about it. I think you guys are making this more complicated than it has to be. Basically you can tag one buck per season. The DNR wants people to shoot more does in these management and intensive areas and as long as you buy the tag you are good for muzzy, even if you shot one bow hunting and riffle hunting.

If by season you mean YEAR, than you are correct. You cannot, however, take more than one buck in any given year. Just trying to clear it up as some will see season and think.... tag one buck in archery season.... tag one buck in firearms season.... tag one buck during muzzy season.... and that you cannot do.... kudos to everyone for helping out to get the correct solution
