Worth hunting in the rain???

Recommended Posts

I hunted last weekend, saw does/fawns on opening day and did not shoot - - waiting for the big boys I have on trail cams to show up. Activity dropped off Sunday and Monday with the sun and warmer temps. I have Friday off and plan to hunt Fri, Sat & Sun. The forecast for SE Minn is lower temps on Fri and Sat but 80% of rain on Friday. I have a couple of deer stands/tower blinds with roofs that I can stay relatively dry in, but is it worth sitting...will the deer move in the steady/pouring rain?

Deer pretty much ignore drizzle and light rain. When it gets more intense, they tend to bed or seek shelter. Forecasts are only worth so much. I look at a forecast and add a few notches, and gear up for the worst. If it's horrible, so be it, but most times it's not that bad, and it only takes ONE deer to make your season.

Why sit inside the house when it's hunting season? smile

I will be out there friday morning, and looking forward to the weather swing....I will be changing it up a bit though. There is a BIG NASTY THICKET (I've been avoiding this adventure, but know it will pay off, It's surrounded by a river, but at sunset i can hear deer crossing the river like crazy)....and i'll be sneaking through there ever so slowly to find the smart bucks....who lay in there all day with the does...and come out at night to get another gal!

I've seen two smaller bucks leave that spot in the morning, and several does leave there as well....And in the evening, them little bucks come back to the thicket with some new does.

I hope its a downpour...sneak right up on em! wink

A couple of years ago the rest of our party went in on opening weekend-Sunday since it was raining. We stuck it out and were rewarded with my son scoring. The others were in shock that the deer would move in the rain. As for me, I only get so many days to hunt and I'll sit through anything just to be hunting deer so a little rain won't stop me.

Go. Some of the biggest bucks I've seen have let there guard down in the rain, they can't smell you as easy, see you, etc. puts a lot of odds in your favor and yesterday at 2:41 in the rain had a small buck working his area, heavy steady rain isn't great but it can't rain forever and hope you get intervals where it stops and restarts etc.
