Highly recommend you call the Sheriffs office with the find. Viewership is limited on this site. Sheriff's Office would be the first place I would check. It can also be checked for possible stolen.

My understanding if no one claims after so many days the gun should be returned to you.

It's easy I left my 300 win mag leaning aginst a fence post when my girlfriend shot her first deer, got home and noticed two cases but one was empty.

I had a shotgun in a hard case slide out of the back of my truck once luckly a buddy found it and all it cost me was a dozen arrows.. so it can happen to the best of us .

there really is no excuse for losing your weapon! this is coming from a vereran who has been trained to never ever ever leave your weapon alone!! you loose it your in deep doggy doo doo!!!! when im out huntin im never more then 2 feet from mine! but cudos to your on your integrity! and i second the sherif comment!

Little different situations here. In the military, your weapon is your life, hunting is just hunting. Things get misplaced. However, if one of my sons came home without his (read my) rifle, he would still be doing pushups.

you could also call the ATF tell them what happened and give them the serial #. If the owner that purchased it still owns it or knows who they sold it to they may be able to contact them and it can go from there.....

I also think the Star Trib lets you put free lost and found ads in the paper....

Great job and great sportsmanship. I've know of a few that set the gun in case on roof or bed of truck that have gotten home and found them missing. Some found - some not.
