worst feeling a hunter can have?

Recommended Posts

Not the worst feeling but a learning experience foresure. Just to try to put things in perspective by writing this now I had the same feelings / question after I recounted missing a monster 200 inch buck here in Iowa to a friend of mine back at the truck after the hunt. My friend simply stated to me that the worst feeling a hunter could have would be if the hunter accidentally shot someone or God forbid kills someone on a hunt. By remembering to always be safe and practice sound shot attempts, I can deal with the missed shots or the loss of a wounded game animal knowing I tried my best, took an ethical shot and exhausted all efforts to find any wounded game animal.

don't give up, just cuz the blood trail dries up doesn't mean you didn't put him down!

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!

What are you doning sitting on the computer??? And why arn't you looking for it???

You need to walk & walk & walk then drive to the next place he could have gone & walk & walk & walk again.

Get buddies, wives, kids, fathers, mothers, brothers sisters, etc. (DRESS THEM IN ORANGE)

Get out and find it...

By the way there are way worse feelings a hunter can have TRUST ME!!!!!

Good Luck

The question was what part of the state do you live in?

The answer was central Minnesota.

If the individaul that asked the question wanted a more specific answer he would have said "By what city do you live/hunt?"

Seems about right if you ask me.

Mustang, hope you find him! smile

I've gone back in the next day after deer when the blood trail disappeared, and found it. I'd start at the end of the blood trail and look for other signs, as well as smaller, more widely spaced blood spots. If you lose it altogether, then I'd wander my way from that location to where you saw this buck bed during summer.

The second worst feeling a hunter can have (tragic accidents not included) is when you look back at a lifetime in the woods and realize you have hunted your last season. But then you have to remember those you have passed your knowledge on to.

i went back last night, had a hard time even finding our last blood, i went through the field and walked through most of the woods surrounding the field. the other woods i couldnt check cuz my uncle was hunting there. about a 65 acre swamp right next to where we last found blood. Some of the time we just followed the tracks, they were easy to spot. I hunt the st. cloud area.

Oh man you could still find him! it took a wk to find my buddies.. And it was after we gave up lookin! we heard a party of crows in the woods right by where he shot it. We went in heading towards all the squawking and 30 mins later my buddy was holding a Nice 8 pointer in his hands wink

Sounds like a GPS unit and a roll of flagging would be good investments for you. I hope that doesn't sound rude....just a frendly suggestion. I use both items all the time.

What color was the blood?

Was there any hair found at the intitial shot site or anywhere else during the tracking? What color was the hair?

Was there a lot of blood, or just some here and there?

How did the buck react upon immediately hit? Was the tail up as it ran away or did the tail stay down?

Head from last blood spot towards nearest water source with your eyes to the ground. Deer will typically feel like they are dehydrated and head towards water.

Second worse feeling, letting a buck pass because you want him to get a little bigger and hearing the neighbor blast away at him.

Don't know if you have access to dogs or not but I have helped the neighbors out twice with my labs finding deer that had run into large swamps and died. If its dead the dogs will find it.
