Emergency shear pins?

At Paul R's suggestion, and cause I have a good story A few years back, we knocked the shear pin out of my 2 horse mariner on my canoe. End of clearwater lake, heading into a small brookie lake further in. We were ditching the motor as that's as far as you can use it, but figured we'd better fix the pin first. No pins, VERY limited supplies, tackle, etc...Couldn't even find a nail in a tree. Finally found a single, old, rusty nail. Too big We had nothing, literally. Went through the tacle again, it didn't take long. The only POSSIBLE piece of metal ws my hemostat, stainless steel. No cutting tool, of course. We spent the next hour, or maybe 2, beating the sh** out of that hemo, and our fingers, with 2 rocks. FINALLY get it to break. 1/8th inch too long. Start over on the other jaw, another hour, maybe a little less. (We're getting pretty good as this now) FINALLY get it too break, last chance, and danged if it didn't work! That pin stayed in that motor for about 2 years...

Good story traveler, although it sure sounds like a frustrating experience.

My friends and I have a backwoods shack that is water-access only. We used to leave a 3hp motor chained up under the boat. There were some vandalism problems over the years, but really never too bad. Anyways, we head in there one night, and the motor starts up but won't go anywhere. It doesn't take long to figure out our predicament. Upon inspection, it wasn't a broken shearpin--but a stolen shearpin! I can't believe someone would take the time to pull a shearpin out, but it happened. I believe we actually found a nail that fit, and we made it into the cabin after some amount of frustration.

Ever since that experience (about 12 years ago), I've carried a spare shearpin for the 3hp, in my wallet. It doesn't take up much space, but it could sure be useful someday.

I have a small plastic box inside the kicker cover with pins and cotter keys and a small pliers. It's held in with Velcro so I don't have to worry about vibration.

Out duck hunting one time I did use a nail as an emergency back up. Enough to just get me home!!

Twice that I remember having to scratch up something, both times I've had a pliers with. Once I used the pointy thing in the middle of my beltbuckle and the other time I scrounged up some barbed wire. I finally realized its easier to have a few extras along. keep them taped right to the tiller handle. If your lucky sometimes you can use the old sheared one too if ya get it stickin out one side just right. Maybe someone should take the shear pin out of Tom H's bowmount? Havent talked to tom in ages, need to give ya some guff. lolol Evil trick....Paul

I always try to have extras along .. but somehow they often end up in my wader pocket from duck hunting, or in a tackle box that didnt make it, or the wrong shear pin.

The best I found was part of the shaft from a screw driver .. but talk about hard to cut with a leatherman tool... but it lasted for years. Other than that I can remember using a piece of wire from the old chain metal stringers, a stick(failed miserably), a straitened hook shank from a musky plug, the cotter(sp?) pin for the nut that held the prop on(worked great until I hit reverse, oops), and the small bolt that holds the fuel fitting in place on my 5 hp worked ok too.

Carry extra pins in several places to be sure you always have them on hand.. dont forget about pins and an extra prop for TROLLING MOTORS... all minnkota(that I know of) transom mount motors (motors with reverse) will spin the prop off immidiately if you hit reverse with a broken pin... well worth a $12 ivestment to have an extra on hand to keep from ruining an outing, or in some cases a weekend.

Got downstream on a river once and broke my only pin. Had to drift to a kind stranger's place to get help.

You can make great spares out of welding rods.

Just got back from duluth/grand marais.. took the wife and the car, I got to two harbors and I was wishin I had the boat with..They looked to be actually doing a little catching out there at the moment..
