bloc004
I am looking at a new layout blind, I am leaning towards a final approach or avery, but wanted to hear some suggestions on what you guys have and like about yours.
bobbymalone
I have a cheapo World's Foremost brand layout and I like it. Not as nice as a spendier model, but it gets the job done. The only recommendation I have is get one that is Max-4 or some sort of corn stalk camo or something. The base brownish color ones hardly match the soil in a field and require a lot more mudding up and stubbling to blend in.
carpshooterdeluxe
in my shed right now i have a ghg ground force, avery finisher, FA sub, FA prolandr, and 2 gooseview (otter outdoors) xterminators. i sat in the ground force all spring for snows and i hate it. the joints are too loose; the cloth is wearing thin in contact areas with the bars, and the fabric takes longer to dry out when it gets wet. i've run the prolandr all fall, and other than it taking a little longer to set up if you take it down all the way to a 3 fold setup, it can easily be carried out on your shoulders just folded in half. the profile is also better than a gf or finisher. take a look at the rogers sporting goods branded blinds, or the scheels blinds as well. both are made similar to finishers or SUBs, but can be found for cheaper money. or check on waterfowling forums for used blinds and save some $$.when it comes down to it, you will want to consider profile vs. comfort vs. ease of transport and decide what works for you. everybody has their favorites, and no two people require the same exact needs out of a blind.as far as camo pattern, it really shouldn't matter what pattern you get, a heavy coating of mud over a misting of paint pretty much covers up the camo any ways. especially if you hunt a lot of chisel plowed wheat stubble or chiseled/ripped corn fields. right now we are seeing a lot of birds hitting black fields of plowed corn so we run our blinds mudded heavy with very little stubble. cps420us
I've only used my Avery Finisher, but I love it, so comfortable you can take a nap. I have just the plain brown one, covered in dry mud.
walleyehunter80
FA ProGuide is what I hunt out of and have used it for the last 8 years and it will last another 8+ years i believe. I also have a PowerHunter that is used during high preasure times in fields with little cover
Stringerless!
I had an Avery pro hunter and gave it to my oldest son after using it twice. I did not like the very restricted vision looking through the mesh and that support bar. Bought a Hunter Specialties "Hit man " at the game fair and used it for the first time the other day. Very happy with it as far as visibility and comfort. Drawback- it collapses flat but does not fold. It barely fits in an S10! Maybe after I try to get it in my Pontiac vibe the other kid will have a new blind too !
bloc004
I would have thought that mesh "dome" on the avery pro hunter would have given you a better view, but I can see how that bar would get in the way. I found a FA Eliminator Express in mossy oak duckblind for $99 on a random HSOforum. I am thinking at that price if I dont like it, I will have a cheap extra one. Maxxed Out
Rogers sporting goods now makes there own layouts (GooseBuster $149) and I bought a few after losing a couple when my trailer door popped open...*&%*!. Used them in the field this weekend and my clients really liked them. They are like the FA subs back when they were quality and not junk (do not buy a new FA sub). My favorite for the money is the new Mancave by hardcore. It isn't higher profile but it's wider and gives you tons of space inside (we had geese working this weekend and I took it my Mojo down and put it in the blind with me and didn't even know it was there). Right now they are $170 on Rogers Sporting Goods. Or you could just get a couple of free ones if you drive around the Lac qui parle refuge and look in the ditch If you find them you will likely also get a free pick ax and rake... Stringerless!
[PoorWordUsage] sure my stuff is checked and double checked before I go down the road. All I have ever lost is an air lucky duck that took life and flew out of the boat. He was not lucky when the car behind me smashed him to smithereens. (sp ?) Huh. I drove by some layout blinds laying haphazardly on the side of the road and figured some yahoo city hunter who didn't know how to load a trailer must have lost his gear. looks like i was right. sorry to hear you lost your blinds though. you put the word out around the area at all? Maxxed Out
I had to go across a chisel plowed field and I'm guessing that it just popped open. It was about a week before I realized they were gone actually. Luckily they were my two least favorite to put people in.
JBar
I like my avery finisher and on several hunting trips after a couple of buddys using mine went a bought their own. I also like my power hunter but I only use it when a low profile is a must. I personaly don't like the swing open hatch style after using it the power hunter has. both have lasted well. Roosterslayer05
I have a power hunter. I take the bar out all the time. Not very comfertable that way. I bought a field kaki because it was cheaper. Blends in great with cut beans. The Max 4 is just too dark. I usually lightly spray my blind with a field kaki color paint then mud it. Without the paint the mud doesent stick. Its hard to get enough mud on the thing with the paint. That being said camo pattern doesent really matter when your blind is covered in mud. If your going to be walking long distances, or into fields allot the power hunter is the way too go. It folds down and has straps so u can throw it on your back. My buddy has a coffen blind and when we have to walk half a mile with a dozen fullbodies each he has too work twice as hard as myself. Maxxed Out
Here's a great idea. Why don't they just make them black to start? Everyone takes their layout out of the box paints it black and then muds it. As a guide it would save me a ton of time and spray paint. It's really pointless to have it as MAX4 when Max4 is WAY to dark to fit in with corn, wheat or Soybeans. Just seems like it would make too much sense... I don't think it would sell as good as khaki does; not every state is blessed with the rich black soil of the upper midwest. nat gear and field khaki match the soil in a lot of western states. Maxxed Out
Good point but at least make it an option.
