I'm guessing by your reply that there are a lot of people around and it may be somewhat chaotic. Maybe I'd be better off down river farther by Alma. Is the fishing supposed to be just as good in that pool? I hate big crowds, but can deal with it just to wet a line. Haven't fished the river in approx. 10 years, so I'm anxious to get back.

By March it will not matter which dam you are at, it will be chaotic. Start your fishing in Feb and get some quality out of it.

Planning on heading to Red Wing to fish the Miss. the 1st warm weekend we get in March. Any tips or suggestions for a successful trip?

If there is a warm day or two in Feb. I would hit the river. Like Tom said everyone will have the same idea as you come March. As far as bait, try the jig and minnow thing but never rule out plastics, the river eyes have a special place in there hearts for ringworms! Good luck to ya!

CabinBoy...Listen to what Jimmy has stated....only I'd leave the minnows to home and bring jigs and these plastics in the following colors: ringworms; pro-blue, oystershell,purple/chart tail, elec. blue/ chart tail...PowerBait minnows; chart. shad, black shad, rainbow shad...Mad Toms; red shad. Drag along a couple sonars in different colors and you will catch fish. I'll tell you straight away that the plastics will catch as many, if not more , fish that the bait and they will most certainly be much larger fish than those caught on bait. Go ahead, throw the bait bucket in the back seat and if you really need it, you can go back and get the bait at Evert's. So you know....I have not put a fall/winter/spring sauger/waldo in the boat using minnows in the last four years!

Thanks for your help and info. - I enjoyed reading you reply's. I was planning on bringing plenty of plastics as I have got turned on to them in the last couple of years. Have had great luck with them on the Rainy in the Spring & Fall. Do you guys have a favorite depth you like to fish or do you do a lot of searching? Any luck with wing dams this time of year? Thanks!

I would concentrate more on the 5-15ft depth along riprap areas away from the current. The majority of my nicest fish have been at this depth range, some even shallower.

Cabin.....Depends on whether you are looking for waldos or sauger. As Jimmy has mentioned the waldos will be shallower with cloudy days being the best producers. On clear days look a bit deeper. The sauger will typically be much deeper and you'll do better in water from 12 to 22 feet or even deeper. On cloudy days again, though, you may find a few sauger right up in 10 feet along with the waldos.

Hi, Have any of you guys tried plastics early in the spring on the Missouri in South Dakota? In the spring thats where I fish. We rely mostly on Jigs and Minnows but sometimes use power grubs.

Don't be afraid to spread out a little and venture downstream from the groups by the dam.

I know this is tough to do with all those rods bending and nets in the water by the dam but I have caught better quality fish downstream a bit.
