new frabill lights

I was browsing the other day when I came across these gems. There are four led pods (positionable) on a bar, almost like someone from frabill stole my idea!

Anyone pick a set up yet? I imagine they'll have them powered up in a display unit soon, but just wondering how well they work if you've got em.

I have had a similar light to that for a couple years now. I actually have 2, one I use in my ice house in winter end tent in the summer. The other is attached to the ceiling of my topper in place of the burnt up light the topper came with. Mine they lights rotate and angle though also. Also I'd have to see how much light the Frabill puts out and the price, mine was around $17 at various box stores.

Here is a picture of the one I have been using:

FYI - Cabelas is selling the Frabill light for $40. I have the same one as bikeoutback, I got it from Menards for $18 or so. It works pretty good (I like being able to throw directional light down on the holes) but it sucks when the AAA batteries start to die.

This year I am looking at picking up some 12VDC Christmas lights, string them along the cross beams and run them off a sonar battery. That will improve the ambient lighting. I'll keep the strip for directional lighting unless it turns out that I don't need it anymore.

How many AAA batts does it take? For a few bucks at radio shack, you could wire it up to your 12v flasher battery pretty easily and the draw is so minimal you'd have light for days. Just need to drop the voltage down so you don't cook the lights.

Im going to get a set and try them in my Otter Lodge over the front door. It says they dont need to come off when folding up the house so thats nice. I wonder if you have to run all the lights at 1 time or if you can shut some off as needed?

I got 2 sets of the OPS Ultra-Bright LED lights from tThe Outdoor Pro Store last year. One of the OPS Ultra-Bright LED lights runs on batteries and 1 runs off my Marcum battery. They both worked very well in my Otter cabin. I only used 1 over the top cross bar and that was enough in the cabin but I think I would like more light in the Lodge at times.

[Note from admin: If you're looking for even more light you might take a look at the OPS Luminator LED lights. Might even be more for less smile ]

GM had the frabill led lights in one of their displays when I stopped by. Looks like all four pods are running on one switch, and I wasn't all that impressed with their output to be honest. I think a guy would need at least two of those bars in a 2 man portable to be able to see anything.

The new Frabill modular Lights are very sweet. $29.99 at Gander. I bought one as soon as they were available, love it. Been very handy in the boat this fall too.

They last days and days, or what I should really say is they last nights and nights.

Up top in the shack where it is warm, and tightly Velcro secured onto the top or rear support frame they hold there juice far better.

The new generation Light Emitting Diodes produce a lot of light very efficiently and each beam can be individually focused for maximum effect and to optimixe there use.

They take 6 Double A's, (1.5V x 6 = 9V) so....if you wish, with a tiny bit of McGivering, you can very easily adapt them to run from 12 V to 9 V with a voltage drop and plug in. wink

As another poster said, it uses 6 AAA's. I'm switching over to L E D strips and a 12v rechargeable this year so I am optimistic that jerry rigging some sort of converter for the spotlights won't be necessary - Hopefully they can retire.

I saw those at fleet farm yesterday and they looked nice.

Its pretty sweet that there is all these kinds of lights being made just for ice fisherman. I can think a couple years back and remember the big deal was the made in china light strips that came off a bay of e. Now we got a bunch of options that are all really good. There is UFO's, UFO's with fan, puck lights, light strips that have tape already on them, light strips with moveable pucks ect. Pretty awesome.

LOL - I remember all those posts and almost bought myself some of those.... Crazy to think how many of them have come out since. I currently use two of the UFO ones in my Frabil Refuge (run on 4 AA each and paid about $7 a piece for those.) Work great till the batteries start to go!

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
