Kindle vs. Nook?

3rd generation Amazon Kindle or Barnes and Noble Nook and why?

WiFi only or WiFi and 3G?

Can you serf the net, check email, facebook with these or only download books?

Is one better than the other or have access to more books?

Do they read out loud to you?

Any positives and/or negatives are appreciated.

Thanks!

Bought my wife a Nook last spring when they became more available. She loves it. No, it does not allow email or web.

The WiFi and 3G network it uses is only for their webstore.

You can subscribe to magazines and papers with it and buy

books. They have thousands of free books to Download to.

I would prefer to buy an Ipad, does more of what I need it for. My Ipod Touch is getting hard on the eyes.

Go with the Kindle and a leather-bound lighted jacket cover! You will have zero strain on the eyes when reading it and feels exactly like reading a hardcover book, minus the way you turn the pages. The Ipad is nice for the email/web capabilities, but try reading it in the sun and your eyes and head will hurt after reading for a while in any light because it is like staring at a lightbulb for long periods of time.

Wifi is just fine if you have easy access to a wifi hotspot, but if you travel a lot or whatever you might need it for, the 3G is definetly worth the extra $$ especially since it has no monthly fees.

No matter what you get you will have a huge selection of books to choose from. But like anything now days, some publishers/authors will be restricted to a certain device by contract. So do some research on your favorite authors and see if they are available on the device you choose.

Good Luck!

Does the new Kindle with 3G allow you to actually surf the entire internet or just to buy books and magazines? What about the text to voice feature? Does it work well? That is one of the main reasons I am thinking about the new Kindle.

Thanks

Another option: if you have a smart phone, download the app.

I know, its not the best screen for lots of reading, but for having something for just traveling, it works well. Plus you get pretty much every function in one device.

Just a thought.

That's exactly what I do with my Droid and the Kindle app and it works pretty good. I'm not a hardcore reader so I dont mind the smaller screen. I can also do a heck of alot more with it than the Kindle or Nook ever will, and I don't need to buy another expensive piece of electronics

And no, the Kindle and Nook cannot surf the Internet, the WiFi and 3G can only connect to the book stores. I've never played with the text to talk feature on the Kindle so can't comment on it.

I am interested in the Kindle, but I am not much of a computer guy. Does it work right out of the package, after registration etc of course? The reason I ask is because I was looking at them at Best Buy and there was a offer of having the Geekers set it up. Is this needed or can a non computer guy handle it?

Thanks

My girlfriend just did an update on her Nook and she is now able to surf the entire internet on it! It's only available on wifi but it's a huge leap forward for e-readers IMO. Anybody know if the Kindles are internet accessible yet?
