Help: Trail Cam Settings

Recommended Posts

I have a Stealth Cam Sniper 6.0, that I bought last year. I put it up last weekend, and all I picked up was photos with nothing on it. I could see that it probably thought the moving tall grass was "something" and snapped pictures of it. I'm a bit of a newbie, so i'm wondering what settings are on your trail cams?

ive never had a stealth cam. ive had moultries and wildviews and recently got a few cuddebacks. the cuddeback expert i just bought is the only one of mine with a sensitivity setting. i had a buddy put a stealth cam out in ND and in one windy day filled up a 2 GB card because of moving grasses. I would just cut down the grasses out to at least 15-20 ft away if you dont want any blank pics of the wind

Make sure you aim it away from the rising or setting sun, any movement will trigger a photo. I've had good luck placing them in shaded areas or facing them directly north or south. Just about every cam will get pics of nothing, but it is also nice that they are sensitive enough to pick up that big buck when he walks by so you have to give and take a little.

Chippy, you don't want to use stealth cams in grassy areas. they are very trippy to that sort of movement. i put mine out between two alfalfa fields; 3 days later i had 600 pics and none of deer!

try to put it up in a place clear of debris; where your quarry will spend more time than just a fleeting second. i.e. scrapes, rubs, mineral site, corn feeder.

I was in the same boat. 1400 photos of moving grass. I figured out that it was not the grass, but certain tall weeds that bend and sway enough to cause issues.

I have now reset all of my cameras so they have a backdrop of trees or solid thick brush so there is no chance that stuff 100 feet away is triggering the camera. I am getting much better photos, and almost no false triggers (although there is one squirrel that needs to be removed from the ecosystem).

On a related note, what settings are people using? I am taking 4 photos with one minute between triggers.

I used to use a Moultrie in my back yard and it took great pictures, Very few of just grass moving around. I bought a Stealth Cam because the moultrie's LCD screen failed on mine and I figured I would try a different brand. So far I havn't been very pleased with it. 1000 pictures a week of grass moving around. I have walked past it a few times also and it didn't even pick me up as I walked by so who know how many deer did the same thing.
