2001? Polaris 500 Sportsman H.O. question

I may be off a year or two, its a DU special addition anyway and its my dad's not mine. Here is my question. We were using it the other day to pull out docks and boat lifts and I noticed when I turned the key off, it didn't kill. now I'm not talking the engine had some run on or something, I mean it didn't turn off at all. It wouldn't start if the key wasn't on, but once on, the key didn't turn it off??? I had to use the slide/starter switch to kill it. Thoughts?

I also noticed the winch didn't seem to have as much power as it once did, if there is an electrical short somewhere could the two be related?

sounds like something got wet, or a bad connection. I would starte at the switch and pull all the connections appart and apply some di-electric grease and connect them back up

Does it have a Warn winch by chance? I ask because they had some bad solenoids (recalled) back then that were sticking on and causing fires. Could be the solenoid is sticking and causing a backfeed to the ignition somehow.

My Dad's mid 90's Polaris 325 doesn't always shut off w/ the key, either. He just uses the kill switch or chokes it out. Don't know why that it is happenning, but I'd bet it was in the key column's wiring.

Start by checking to see if current from the winch solenoid shuts off when the key is turned off.

Its the key switch; had to replace it on all my quads, Sportsman 700 and 400.
