Xbox help needed

Yes, I said Xbox. A friend of ours has an Xbox that quit working, no more video out signal.

She dropped it off for me to try to fix.

I can go to YouTube and look at videos until I tell her to just go buy a PS3 grin but I won't.

Anyone have any suggestions?

The disc tray won't open either. I've already tried popping that open with a knife while hitting the eject button, but I'm afraid they left a disc in while bring it over and now it's wedged in.

She's already bought a new one, her kids can't be without a babysitter. whistle

Anyone want to try to walk me through this.

Or is there a fix for this through Microsoft that's fairly cheap?

Her ex is a deadbeat, so she's trying to do this without spending alot of money.

There should be a hole that you can use a paper clip to eject the tray manually with.

Not sure about the video out....most of the times, the end user has the wrong source selected on the TV grin

You can send it in to Microsoft and they will probably fix it for a flat fee.

The unit powers up. The power button has the green light that rotates around when it's powered on.

The fans come on, I can hear the unit try to eject the tray when I push eject.

I just got done trying to make the unit reset by over-heating it by stopping the fans, we'll see if that works.

I took the faceplate off, and got the disc tray to pop out and close twice under its own power, now it's sticking again.

Still no go on the video.

The other problem is, she didn't give me a game to put in, so I'm not sure if I have video or not.

Maybe I'll have to run up to Blockbuster and rent one, or go buy the Halo and hope I can get it to work.

One more thing. It says Xbox 360, and it's a bigger white console. When I'm doing searches on Google, I should just be looking at 360, not elite, arcade, etc., correct?

It'll display without a game in it. You would RRoD if the problem was the video out. Check on the cable and make sure that little switch is in the right position, and also that there's no bent pins or anything like that. The eject switch is probably worn out, you could replace that. However if you get the video working there's an eject disc option in the menu that could be used.

I'm using my own HDMI cable from the PS3, she was using component cables, which I have as well.

At one point, I had the HDMI reading on the TV "mode not supported" but then it just went back to "no signal".

I'm "going in" now, grin and no, there's no warranty.

Is there sound when it starts? On PS3, there's a screen with PS3 and the menus that pop up, with some sound to it, would that same thing happen on Xbox?

I don't have any sound.

try it without the HDMI cable if at all possible. i.e. try hooking up via another input (composite/component/whatever). Your cable between Xbox and TV could be bad also.

I've had HDMI cables AND HDMI TV inputs go bad.

and yes, there is sound when it starts up......some kind of space-crafty sounding noises.

I tried with both hdmi and composite. There's no video and no sound. I tore into quite extensively last night and couldn't get to work.

Either I'm going to throw it on an auction site, or throw it in the garbage. It SHOULD be worth something, even as parts.

Check this place out, it's pretty inexpensive for Xbox repair. I've taken my kids Xbox there several times when they first came out. Even a phone call to them may at least tell you how much to fix. Much cheaper then sending off to Micrsoft and you'll get it back in a few days. MPLS Gaming

I gave it back to the gal and told her to either dump it in the garbage, or if she ever gets an $100 (single mom with 4 kids) she could send it in and repair it for a back up.

Said it wasn't worth the hassle when she can get a new one for $150, for what they use it for.
