Shedding some tears over a dropped part

Recommended Posts

I thought I would vent in here. I pulled the EGR valve on my '05 superduty tonight to clean it. A sooted up EGR valve on the 6.0L diesels is one of the major problems with the ford superduty. Its a very manageable issue if you clean your EGR every 10K miles or so.

Well, I pulled my EGR tonight so I could let it soak in carb cleaner overnight. While I was scrubbing off the excess soot, I dropped it and badly bent it. WAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

This is a $300+ part. I coulda cleaned it for $6 for new orings. Son of a &*^%@#(*&

There are delete kits available, but as with any modification, it has its benefits and pitfalls.

On the 6.0 it can be a bit more involved than on some other motors.

There is a lot of info out there about it, I'd read up a bit before making any decision.

Andy, I don't know the first darn thing about if your EGR valve can be eliminated or not. However, in various different situations with different parts I've done the same thing and I feel your pain buddy.

Maybe if I wern't such a klutz these things wouldn't happen to me.

Do you really need it ? I know it's one of the first things they remove from Cummins engines to allow the to get better mileage.

Is there a way to "delete" it ?

Valv....you do this with yours? This on all the Cummins....or just newer ones?

Andy, if you a re sooting up your egr valve that much, there are 2 ways to prevent it from happening. One way is free, and easy to do, dont let the truck idle more then a couple minutes at a time, ideling these trucks cause soot build up in the egr valve, the intake, and the turbo. Ford recommends no more then 3 minutes of idle time. The other way to prevent it is to get the computer reflashed, Ford programmed it so the egr valve is open less at idle, and wont soot up as much.
