Sheet rock taping rates

Barony

Recommended Posts

Just recd a quote for a mudding/taping job on our addition. I have no idea what rates are, but the bid was $.54/ft for the job. They supply all materials. Good rate, bad rate, within reason? I have no idea what they charge.

It all depends on what they are doing. Texture or not, quantity of work to do, finished taped and sanded, type 5 finish of "garage" finish, side work or legit, insurance and bond or nothing, some tapers will prime to get all touch ups, etc.

It seems light to me as a GC, but I have no idea if they are good or not. Buyer Beware.

Just get several quotes from different contractors. Ask for references and check them out. You'll get a good idea who is offering a good price for good work. Just got to do the leg work.

People here might be able to tell you if the rate is within the right ball park but it doesn't matter if the guy doesn't do good work.

Price is always relative. IMHO the best thing you can do is ask for references to see if his work has been satisfactory, if he sticks to his bid price and if he gets the jobs done in a timely manner. Many times the satisfaction of a low bid gives way to a lifetime of disappointment in a job that didn't turn out right.

Good work ain't cheap

Cheap work ain't good

You said it, I had a house buildt a few years ago. Finished area about 1200' with vaulted celings. It took 2 days for them to hang tape and paint. When I walked through I could point out most of the mistakes and blemishes. a year later we painted with darker colors and I was like OMG these people suck.

So when it came to finishing the lower level I said to mysel I can do a better job then that. I had help hanging the rock friend in the trade. He recamended me a couple guys that do a good job. After one quote I said I got this. After seeing the job that was already done on the upstairs. I have never did anything larger then a hole in the wall. 3 weeks later I almost did as good of a job as the pros hired for the upstairs but did't even come close to the work the guy do my friend recomened. Long story short you get what you pay for.

I want to say to tape/mud 3 coats, prime, and texture. Was just about a $1.25 a foot and I was getting a discount. That was 3 years ago I supplied the primer

Good luck

Might be late on this reply- so sorry.

$.54 is about the going rate for hang, tape, and texture. Price will go up depending on ceiling height. May pay extra for smooth finsh, Knock down or so on.

Normally for hanging anything or 8' is double, over 12' is triple.

No way-- 1200 sq. ft. Thats roughly 120 sheets of 4x12 sheetrock. 1 day for any size crew to hang. Good taper 3 days to tape- 1 coat, 2 coat and finish coat. 1 day dry time for each coat= Prime one day- paint one day.

So hang-1 day + tape 3 days + paint 2 days = 6 days minimum for quality job.
