Doop
Hey guys, anyone live or used to live in or around the Malta area? I am putting together a whitetail hunt for that area and was wondering what the area was made up of. I was looking at it on google earth last night and the only timber I could see was around the Milk River and it was sparse timber at that. Ufatz
With all the good ares to hunt in MT why in the world did you pick the Malta area? Head for the river bottom country farther south for whitetails or go farther west in MT.There ARE some deer there if you MUST hunt that area but it is much better known as a bird hunting spot.Whatever. SportFishin'
I haven't been up that way yet, but if it is anything like South Central Montana the only trees are usually along the river bottoms everywhere else is sagebrush or grass. The whitetails key in on these river botttom areas. You rarely find them up in the sage. I would focus on finding a spot near the river with agricultural crops close by. Most of the crops out here are barley, wheat, some corn not much though, sugar beets, & alphalfa.Regards,Chris
TUMBLEWEED
Grew up in Dodson 12 miles west of Malta on good ole hiway 2, the "highline". The Milkruns east and west pretty much, between Maltaand Dodson south of hiway 2. I don't know of much public land along the Milkin and around Malta or Dodson?? I was out thereagain this past May, and it was pretty green. The antelopes were thick south of Dodsonfeeding on the new sage.If I was going for whitetail,I would head south of Malta. There are lots of coulees and other spots with heavybrush pockets and water. A couple of the larger ranches outthere used to allow hunters on. Not sure about now.East of Malta is the Fort Peck area and southeast of thereare the breaks. A lot of ground to cover, but white tailwill be found in both. Good luck..
