Bear Bait in a Blue berry bog

Recommended Posts

This is my first time bear hunting, and this past weekend when looking for bear bait sites we came across a huge blue berry bog swamp. It was like walking on a bed mattress. I decided to place a bait station in it. I was wondering if anyone has experience with a blue berry bog? Is this a place to stay out of?

Its in the bog. (Maybe I'm not in a bog?) Its all blue berry plants that has moss? growing in it. Its dry on top, but when I cut thru it to make a pit, there was a little water. Once we got down to the ground, it was very cool to the touch. Like I said before it was like walking on a bed mattress. Its also a huge area!

If you bait "on the bog" the bear traffic and the weight of the logs will compress the bog and you will end up with a wet mess, this will stop bears from visiting your bait. Look for bear sign on high ground on the edge of the bog.

Like bog said I usually put my baits right on the edge of swamps instead of in them. It's more for me than the bears though. The bears don't seem to mind walking in swamps as most times their trail to the bait comes strait in from the swamp itself.

I've got a question in line with this post (and couldn't find an answer using the search feature), how do you go about selecting bait placement sites? Ran into a bear baiter this weekend that offered to bait for me as I think about planning a hunt in the coming years...he mentioned that the swamp on our cabin property would be a good place. How do you go about selecting a site? Is it similar to deer hunting using natural feature funnels, or do you need to put them somewhere where scent projection is better? What's a good bait site?

Just think like you are hunting a big racoon if it's really thick with water in the area thats where they will be.
